Buttobi CPU

Don't you wish your computer was this cooperative?

Review by: Craig "Black Seventeen" Norris

Length: 3 episode OAV
Genre: Erotic comedy
Watched: Full OAV, subbed

Right off the bat, it needs to be mentioned that this is a hentai series. It's not particularly graphic; no monster rape, no outsized genitalia, no "money shots," and no tentacles flopping all over the place. In fact, I've seen worse at 1:00AM on HBO. It's not quite porn, but definitely not something you'd want to show your parents.

Plot synopsis: Akira, a high-school student, has been saving up for a new computer, which he eventually buys from a shady guy in an alley (well, it did have a warranty). Upon bringing the computer home, he finds it is not the top of the line PC he thought he was getting, but a naked female android! The hilarity really starts when Akira discovers that his new computer gains its memory from absorbing biological material from her user. (Since I stated before that this is a hentai, I feel I do not have to explain further.)
The plot thickens in the second and third OAVs, where Akira and his computer girl (whom he named Mimi) discover a plot by American-made androids to displace and destroy Japanese models. The model name of these American computers: Nacintosh.

Artwork: For a hentai series, the artwork is surprisingly good. As far as OAVs go, however, it's pretty standard fare. At the very least it doesn't detract from the overall quality.

Music: The opening/closing song is actually pretty catchy. As for the in-episode music... well, let's just say that I wasn't really paying attention to that very much. Lets just say that it gets the job done, but quickly gives way to, ahem, other stimuli.

Characters: As a three episode OAV, there obviously isn't much room for character development. They all seem fairly cliche in some form or another, especially Akira, the stereotypical naive, romantically-inept but well-meaning student. Apparently, in lieu of creating unique characters, Buttobi CPU circumvents that problem by giving us characters we are already familiar and comfortable with.

Plot: With only three episodes, I wasn't expecting much of a plot, and my expectations certainly weren't exceeded. However, what really drives this series is the humor. Buttobi CPU assigns a sexual connotation to just about every computer function imaginable; the usually benign technical terms of memory expansion, software installation, data copying, and security program breaching are all excuses for sex scenes, which, as a result, are often quite hilarious.

CHICKS!: Buttobi CPU tried to cover all the bases. Firstly there's Mimi(left), who is sweet and energetic, and filled with bubbly enthusiasm towards her new position (which is clearly explained and illustrated in the Kama Sutra). Then we have Akira's classmate Shimada, the shy, blushing, bookish cutie in glasses that can't quite work up the courage to divulge her crush on the main character. Then there's Forte, another android girl with an aggressive streak that hides a sense of justice and caring. I think the creators went out of their way to make the Nacintosh sisters (three in all, one below) as babealicious as possible, but they came out laughably curvaceous, which adds to the farcical humor prevalent throughout.

Overall: This was just a fun anime to watch. I would have gotten bored with it if it had gone on for more than three episodes, though. As far as plot and characters go, it has very little to offer. It tries to fill all those gaps with humor and parody, which it almost succeeds in doing. Those looking for a thought-provoking or poignant anime will invariably be disappointed. However, those who just want to sit back with some popcorn and put their brain on autopilot should definitely consider this title. At the very least, it's good for a laugh... and the possibility of it "upgrading" your "hard-drive."

IN A NUTSHELL
+ Absurd in a good way
+ Just long (or short) enough
- Weak plot
- Stereotypical characters
Rating: 6.5/10
