Untitled (GW) by Ali
The country was a place where people went to relax, to escape, to just
get away from the dizzingly fast pace of the cities. Even peace on
Earth couldn't stop deadlines from coming, paper work a mile high and
pressure to come up with the next most innovative invention in the
history of mankind. The country was calm and quiet. It was just there
for people to sit down and watch the world go by. It was amazing how
wonderful doing absolutely nothing for hours could be. A person could
honestly just lie on the grass, create figures from clouds and listen
to...well, listen to nature.
However, for the same amount of time for a human heart to beat twice,
all the peace and quiet were shattered. The slow humm that could be
heard faintly at first crescendoed to a loud, almost-deafening roar and
the world seemed to stop. It was the shattering of the peace that was
brought on by the one who was able to bring it to mankind in the first
place; Relena Darlian, former princess of the Cinq Kingdom, former Queen
of the World...present day Vice Foreign Minister. She came and then,
went almost quickly as she had arrived. Of course, it wasn't her that
did the shattering but she certainly was the cause of it...her and the
sleek, red sports car with black tinted windows.
The normally serene Vice Foreign Minister could not have been recognized
and even if there were witnesses, they would certainly not believe their
own eyes. However, it was Relena, nonetheless. Driving was something
that was hers alone and was her little secret. Sometimes, driving
helped her think but it was more on the fact that she just liked it.
She enjoyed the rush she felt as she shifted gears and let her car
practically tear up the country roads. She was 19 but she never had the
chance to live the seemingly care-free life her old classmates were
lucky enough to enjoy.
Pagan still, of course, drove her around (especially to the political
functions) but as soon as Pagan had taught her to drive, Relena finally
found something she really enjoyed that was not a part of her busy life.
He had taught her all the tricks, all the important skills of a driver
that also took on the role of a bodyguard as he did for her and Relena
knew that he taught her well.
Usually, she would not go at such a high velocity but when she was sure
she was all alone, though she doubt she ever was, she would just let go
and let the car almost guide her along the road. Looking at the time,
she noticed that she had to be home in an hour or Pagan and maybe, Noin
or Zechs, if they decided to do their ritual weekly calls, would be
worried. Sighing a little, she turned left on the next corner and drove
towards home.
As the mansion came into view, Relena began to slow the car down but
before she was even on her street, her phone began to ring. Keeping her
eyes on the road, she leaned forward and pressed the call button.
"Hello?" she said softly, making sure the call would not distract her.
If there was one thing she didn't like, it was talking on the phone
while driving. Her car was equipped with the small speaker system
allowing her hands to be free but the phone was _still_ a distraction.
"Don't turn onto your street."
She immediately slowed down. "What?" she said, giving the phone a
little more attention, "Who is this?"
"Don't ask any questions, turn right on the street that you're about to
approach and drive all the way up the hill until you reach a small
park."
Then, there was a clicking sound and Relena saw the fast approaching
street. Logic would have told her not to follow the instructions but
her instinct told her to trust the mysterious voice. It was vaguely
familiar and she decidedly followed the person's instructions.
As she pulled up to the park there was another car waiting for her.
When she came to a complete stop, the passenger door opened and a young
man, her age, stepped out of the car and turned to face her.
Her eyes widened with recognition and she almost threw herself out of
the car.
"Duo!" she cried and gave the 'big lug' as she liked to put it, a big
hug.
"I knew I recognized your voice. It's so good to see you! How have you
been? Where's Hilde?"
Duo returned the hug and with his wide grin, replied, "All in good time"
and then his face turned a little more serious. "But for now, we have
some more..."
"Urging matters to attend."
Relena slowly turned towards the driver of the car who had just came
out. He was taller but his unmistakeable lean figure and unruly hair
showed that he had not changed a lot. She thought she had forgotten him
or at least wished she could but his presence still struck her to the
very core as it always did. Even if she was able to forget, the sight
of him was enough to make all the memories rush back to her.
"Heero?" Her voice a little shaky that she had wanted it to be. "Is
that you?"
She was given a nod in return and the prussian blue eyes stared back at
her.
to be continued...
