Read the next question before scrolling down to the answer of this one. Q2: It is time to elect the world leader, and your vote counts. Here are the facts about the three leading candidates: Candidate A Associates with crooked politicians, and consults with astrologists. He's had two mistresses. He also chain smokes and drinks 8 to 10 martinis a day. Candidate B He was kicked out of office twice, sleeps until noon, used opium in college and drinks a quart of whisky every evening. Candidate C He is a decorated war hero. He's a vegetarian, doesn't smoke, drinks an occasional beer and hasn't had any extramarital affairs. Which of these candidates would be your choice? He also chain smokes and drinks 8 to 10 martinis a day. 甲: 和痞子政治家打交道, 和天文學家討論議題, 結過兩次婚, 抽煙, 一天喝八到十杯的馬丁尼. 在下會譯為：與貪官污吏為伍，求教於占星家，曾有兩個情婦，是個煙槍，且每天喝八到十杯馬丁尼。可能只是個人主觀，在下認為「政治家」這詞有褒義，不適用於 crooked politicians。我認為 statesman (or -woman) 和「政治家」比較相稱。至於 politician 通常是貶義或中性（neutral, 即不褒不貶），稱為「政客」較恰當吧。另 astrologist(= astrologer) 在現代的用法中，非指天文學家(astronomer)，而是利用星相算命的人。又，既然是 "mistresses", 應該沒有婚姻關係。 He's a vegetarian 退伍軍人應該是「他吃素」才對。在下的答案：問題一、會告知孕婦可能發生的後果，但不會建議墮胎，由她自己選擇。問題二、無法根據所提供的資料投票，因為那些敘述都與「能否成為一個好領袖」沒有多大的關係。

Yes, I meant 輪迴, but I didn't use reincarnation (rebirth of the soul) since the definition of the word implies the existence of a soul, whereas cyclic life (sorry for the typo), or cyclic existence, is commonly used in Buddhist texts. I should have written in Chinese as 輪迴, but I could not do so in office.

To me, "cyclic life" is a technical term, meaning the lifespan of an automaton (or a mechanical device). I think that the formal term for 輪迴 in Buddhism is "samsara".

Xiren 個人資料 \| email	posted 11-02-99 9:22 AM PT (US) WHY, I didn't use reincarnation (rebirth of the soul) since the definition of the word implies the existence of a soul 有啥問題呢？在下對佛學沒有研究，但記得輪迴只發生在有「靈魂」的「六道」之間，不是嗎？！ whereas cyclic life (sorry for the typo), or cyclic existence, is commonly used in Buddhist texts. To me, "cyclic life" is a technical term, meaning the lifespan of an automaton (or a mechanical device). I think that the formal term for 輪迴 in Buddhism is "samsara".
YCP 個人資料 \| email	posted 11-02-99 11:27 AM PT (US) 六道都是「有情」﹐而不是「有靈魂」。根據佛家的理論﹐輪迴者乃業力牽引相續﹐輪迴期間顯現的「中陰身」(或曰中有)是現象﹐其中沒有靈魂這種不變的「實體」(也就是「我」了﹐自然違反「諸法無我」的法印)﹐所以生死不是靈魂的移轉。佛典中對輪迴的機理有細緻的分析﹐於此無法細述。 Samsara 是輪迴的梵語﹐英文的普及佛學讀物一般把它譯作 cyclic existence (cyclic life 則未見過)。余非老頭 (看見有關佛學的﹐總是忍不住手……)

Xiren 個人資料 \| email	posted 11-06-99 6:23 AM PT (US) 多謝余非老頭的解釋。在下果然是鈍根下器！一年前讀到這篇余非老頭提供的文章裡，已說過佛家的「無我」即是否定『「依業輪迴」必有一常住不減的「自我」。』這個「自我」的其中一個名稱，就是靈魂，我卻一點也不記得。>_< 當年讀這篇文章時，邊看邊打瞌睡，沒啥得著；如今再讀還是一頭霧水……，唉！
