You can open a topic (內容) in a New Window for the same effect. |

But you have to switch back and forth between two windows. In each window, the problem of having to go back to the topic list to select a new topic, suggested by AJU, still exists. |

It might be impractical right now to suggest big surgeries to the forums. After all, this is 過兒's place. Is it possible though to add a list box (like the "Hop to" at the existing page) which lists all topics in that forum? This should require much less work and doesn't change the look-and-feel of the existing forums. |

I don't think implementing what AJU sugguested can be called "a big suguery". All it would require is to change the existing content page into a frame format. The question should be is it really necessary. |

One entry will take approx 0.2k, so such a listbox would take roughly 14k for Jinyong area. Do you think it is worth it to donwload extra 14k of data for each topic? BTW, I seldom have to switch back and forth between since I usually open all the topics of interest as windows at startup, then close my connection, write my reply messages, reopen the connection and post the replies. |

To wuji: All it would require is to change the existing content page into a frame format. It's not as simple as you might think. Remember -- 1.Topics are dynamic -- it's not like what you see in most web pages where the menu items are fixed. The page has to be constructed at run-time, and BTW, when should those topics be updated? To make it work, a better approach is an expand-down tree list on the left pane, and that's some real work we're talking about. 2.Topics are usually pretty long, so the left pane is not the best place for them -- it will drive people nuts if they have to scroll horizontally all the time. An alternative would be using a "tip" (a small-box that pops up when the cursor is moved to a topic.) ..... Also, making these "improvements" will change the appearance of this site dramatically, and like I said -- it's 過兒's place. CC cannot make those changes without 過兒's approval. Anyway, you don't want to do something ad hoc, so there are a lot of things to be considered if a move that big is to be made. To CC: Do you think it is worth it to donwload extra 14k of data for each topic? I wouldn't suggest loading topics up front. Since topics are dynamic data, they should not be loaded until the action is fired (e.g. onClick), therefore, a pop-up might be a better choice. So, instead of using the framed-window scheme, there are 2 seperate windows -- one serves as the menu, and the other, the view area. I usually open all the topics of interest as windows at startup

So, instead of using the framed-window scheme, there are 2 seperate windows -- one serves as the menu, and the other, the view area. Basically the menu window is the same as the current "list of topics" window with links targeted to a common view window. This can be done very easily by adding "TARGET=xxx" in each of the topic links, i.e. only one line of code has to be changed. how many sessions of browser do you have to run at once?
Some people might need to upgrade their computers in order to do the same. ^_^

Some people maybe at the forum while doing something else like listening to MP3, playing games, chatting, d/l'ing stuff, and those can be handicaps. |

If system resource is a major concern, then one may open a limited number of topic windows at one time, close them, and open other topics of interest. They would be kept in the cache and one can view them offline. One may even use certain mirroring software to download all the topics being replied to during the past N days in one of the discussion areas. |

重點大致為﹕ 1 改版面就要修改程式﹐只有很忙(考大學)的 站主過兒才可以決定。 2 用 frame 劃分版面有不少技術上的問題﹐
3 建議用 open as new window 的方式開啟內
