Christmas

The altar in a Church The great festival of Christmas, celebrating the birth of Christ on December 25, is the most important festival of the Christians. Other Indian communities too regard Christmas as a season of goodwill, greetings and shopping. The birth of Jesus was not celebrated by early Christians, because they belonged to a hunted sect in the Roman Empire, and had to practice their religion in secret. After the conversion of Emperor Constantine to Christianity in the 4th century AD, it became a worldwide religion.

It was decided to celebrate the Nativity publicly every year. However, it was found that different groups of people had been celebrating the birth of Jesus on different dates - January 6, April 19, May 20, November 17 and December 25. By the fifth century of the Christian era, December 25 was accepted by the Church in the West. Some Syrian Christians living in central Kerala in large numbers, celebrate Christmas on January 7.

The features of Christmas include dances, carols, the midnight mass, the Christmas tree, the arrival of Santa Claus and other decorations.
