A Bird's Eye View of India

HimalayasThe subcontinent of India lies in South Asia, surrounded by Pakistan, China and Nepal. On the north, India is bordered by the world's highest mountain chain - the Himalayas. In the south, plateaus, tropical rain forests and sandy deserts are bordered by palm fringed beaches.

The towering temples of south India are associated with many crafts and performing arts of the region. In the deserts of Gujarat and Rajasthan in West India, a scattering of villages against the forces of nature, result in a different lifestyle.

Another facet of Indian culture is the colorful tribal lifestyles, that can be seen in the northeastern states of Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura and Manipur. In the states of Orissa and Madhya Pradesh, tribal villages have developed a variety of handicrafts, which depicts their lifestyle.

Chinese Fishing Nets of KeralaIndia's history can be dated back to 3,200 BC when Hinduism was first founded. Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, Judaism, Zoroashtrianism, Christianity and Islam all co-exist in the country today.

India has constantly been under the influence of foreign countries. Some distinct examples are the Chinese fishing nets in Kerala, the terracotta figurines that can be traced to Greeks and the Gothic touches in the Goan churches.
