Hindu Gods

Vishnu

Vishnu Lord Vishnu, also known as Hari - the remover of hurdles, is the preserver God. In each of the great cycles of time, or kalpa, in which he has rescued the cosmos, Vishnu has appeared in a different form, or avatar.

He possesses four hands. The first hand holds a sankha or the conch, indicating the spread of the divine sound Aum. The second hand holds a sudharsana chakram or the wheel, to remind us of the wheel of time, and to lead a good life. The third hand holds a lotus which indicates a glorious existence. The fourth hand holds a gada or a mace indicating the power and the punishing capacity of the Lord if one ignores discipline in life. Vishnu presides over North and South as the Lord of Eternity.

The vehicle of Lord Vishnu is the eagle Garuda which spreads the Vedic knowledge with great courage. He rests on the bed of the powerful, coiled serpent, Seshanag, who represents the sleeping universe. Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, is his consort.
