Gender Roles in the Asian American Community
At a point in time, the roles of men and women in society could not have been more clearly defined as black and white. As time has progressed, especially in western culture, those typical ideals have become more vague. Women are beginning to play a larger and integral role to how society functions outside the home. However, there are still many cultures in which women play the role of passive and nurturing mothers and wives, while men financially support the family. Particularly in Asian cultures, women continue to be subject to those traditional gender roles. However, as a result of immigration, technology, and societal advancements, a culture clash is occurring. Men and women are being thrust into new roles, being forced to re-evaluate their lifestyles, and often having to choose between how they were raised, and how the world around them has changed. This may cause tremendous stress upon individuals, create gaps between families, and result in the breaking down of cultural traditions...
This website will attempt to analyze traditional Asian and American gender roles, and the clash that may occur as a result of immigration, technology, and other cultural changes. It will also try to describe ways of coping with the clash in cultures. More importantly, this site will take a look at how the clash in gender roles, and the gap in beliefs may affect the relationship of immigrant parents to their children.
