Character Profile: Ash
Ash is the main character in both the pokemon GB game and the pokemon anime series. At the start of the first episode, Ash has just turned ten, just old enough to get a pokemon license. However, he sleeps late on the morning when he was to get his first pokemon, so when he gets to Professor Oak's lab, all the pokemon seem to have been taken. He looks through all the empty pokeballs until he sees the last one. When he opens it, a Pikachu comes out.
Ash is so happy to get this pokemon, he hugs it, but then it lets out an electric shock that lights up the whole room. Not only is Ash literally toasted, Pikachu won't get back into it's pokeball. Ash has to drag Pikachu for the first miles of his journey. As you can see, things aren't getting off to a very good start.
The turning point of events comes when Ash accidentally throws a rock at a very irritable spearow. The spearow comes and attacks Ash and Pikachu, but Pikachu lets out another electric shock on the spearow. That only makes the spearow even more mad, so it summons a whole flock of its kind to attack Ash and Pikachu.
They run, chased by the flock, until they are stopped by a raging waterfall. Ash grabs hold of Pikachu and jumps down into the stream below. They are whisked along until they are suddenly pulled out by a fishing rod. They confront the girl (who turns out to be Misty) who pulled them out, but then suddenly they see the flock of spearows appear over the horizon.
Ash "borrows" the girl's bike and races down the mud path until he hits a rock and mangles the bike. Pikachu and Ash are both very injured by now and they flock is still chasing them, aimed to kill. Then Ash makes a bold move and steps out in the path of the flock to shield Pikachu. Pikachu, who before had disliked Ash to the last dot, saw how much Ash really cared about him and proceeded, despite his injuries, to jump (fly??) out in front of Ash. At that moment Pikachu let out a huge electric burst that nullified all of the advancing spearow.
This creates the unbrakable bond that makes Ash and Pikachu the best of friends for the rest of Ash's long journey to become a pokemon master.
Ash has a dream to become the world's greatest pokemon master. He (music)"wants to be the very best, like no one ever was!"(music)........sorry. As I was saying, Ash is not willing for anything to get in the way of his dream, be it Team Rocket, Gary, or anyone. At first he thinks that the only way he can be the best is by "catching... LOts of...POKEMON!!", but later he realizes that all of his other rival pokemon trainers are cruel to thier pokemon, overtraining them so they can be pokemon masters. He has one thing that all of his rivals don't, kindness for his pokemon. He realizes that to be the true best, he can't let his ego get in the way of himself.
Ash later joins up with Misty and Brock on his quest. His rival, Gary, just shows up a few times in the series, but is a constant threat to Ash's dream to become the world's greatest pokemon master.
