Title: Chocolat
Starring: JULIETTE BINOCHE, Lena Olin, Johnny Depp, Judi Dench, Alfred Molina, and Peter Stormare
Genre:  Romantic Comedy
Rated: PG-13
Rating: *** (out of ****)

The movie was a bit trite. It was great influenced by three things. One, French life in the hill-side countries. Two, anti-religious dogma. And three, chocolate. However, the influence of chocolate wears down as the characters begin to develop. I'm sorry I cannot give Julie a four star rating for this movie (though her performance was well deserved of one), but the movie's plot wasn't worthy. There was a fellow (Peter Stormare) that looked like Judd Nelson, but alas he is not and thus the movie suffers. Here, I'll give you a detailed explanation of what the plot for Chocolat revolved around.

Vianne Rocher (Julie) and her daughter are plagued to a life of traveling from town-to-town with the wind. It was a custom passed down from their grandmother, and these two are victims of fate. One north wind brings these two into a small tranquil French village that challenges them forever. Upon their arrival, Vianna makes enemies with the Comte de Reynaud (Alfred Molina) by telling him she does not attend Church. If this city, that is a crime, which greatly hurts her business. Her only friends become a paranoid, abused wife (Lena Olin), a surly grandmother (Judi Dench), and a pirate (Johnny Depp). Julie... er... Vianne must battle the wills of the town and fight for an individuality this town has never heard of. Sadly though, the movie had some slow parts, and, next to Julie, the cast was rather bland. That's why Chocolat achieves a three star out of four rating.
