The
story began when Big Brother received an assignment from his boss to send
a Mainland Chinese hit man to kill the other gangster boss. Due to the
miscalculation and misunderstanding, the killer doesn't recognize that
Big Brother was the one who picked
him up after the murder. And alas, Big Brother
even accidentally knock down the killer by his car. Even worse, Tung is
also at the scene and the killer told the police, unfortunately not to
Tung alone, that the murder is planned by Big Brother.
Knowing that Tung can no longer cover up the whole thing, Big Brother then
decided to leave Hong Kong for a while. Before he goes, he called his girlfriend
(played by Kathy Chow) to go with her. His girlfriend is the "Mama" in
his nightclub, but she is also a reckless and silly woman who was too late
to go with him at this urgent moment. Big Brother then left without waiting
for her. Instead, he told Tung to take care of her and his protégé,
Pushy-Pin (played by Patrick Tam Yiu Man), who is apparently a timid, inexperienced
lad.
But
everything Big Brother told Tung to do was out of his control. The girlfriend
later fell in love with Sir Wong (played by Michael Fitzgerald Wong), who
is the new head of the precinct. Sir Wong, also known as "The Killer King,"
is a man with attitude and principle. Like what he says, "There is a lot
of gray area between black and white for some people. But there is only
a line between the two for me."
Not only the girlfriend but also Pushy-Pin was betraying Big Brother. He
is gaining more control and confidence when Big Brother was away. He even
crosses his line to court Big Brother's girlfriend and send some teenage
gangsters to use razor blades to attack Sir Wong. The conflicts between
those characters exacerbate when Big Brother returns, trying to redeem
what he has lost --- his girlfriend and his place taken by Pushy-Pin.
Tung was the only one that seems to understand what's going on. He knew
that there is no longer "righteousness" between people. He also knew that
the police are as corrupted as the gangsters. The best strategy in this
world is not to be good or bad but to be somewhere in between. But he still
believed that there was still some kind of "morality" between people. Considered
how he gave all his savings to his girlfriend, who was divorced by her
husband and currently in financial trouble, although he himself needs the
money more than she does. Considered how he advised Pushy-Pin not to go
too far because "he has been watching how he is brought up and doesn't
want him to be another Big Brother."
But what happens next was that the reality reveals itself to him --- he's
living in a world where there is no morality and trust between people.
His good friend is betrayed and burtally killed. His girlfriend falls for
the other one despite getting his money. The cruelty of people and the
absence of love and trust finally drove him to desperation and madness.
The violence in this movie was pretty brutal but necessary to show how
mad and crazy people have become. The most memorable one was when Sir Wong
was under attack by some teenage gangsters. We could see how those young
gangsters take pleasure by accidentally
chopping off the old newspaperman's arm ---
although he is not the target. We see how their girlfriends chase around
and cheer for their boyfriends using razor blades to attack Sir Wong. We
see how excited the boys are when they discuss how the blood gushes out
from the victim and the girls listen to them with admiration. If you think
this scene is exaggerated, let me tell
you this: It's absolutely real in Hong Kong.
The final scene in the movie was probably the bloodiest one in the whole
movie. Tung took revenge and struggled with his enemies in blood bath.
His revenge was not only for his friend but it's against the whole society
in which everybody has to remain "gray" to survive this cold, dark era.
