AX Memorial
What is AX?AnimeXpress (AX) was a newsletter we used to publish for CTRL-A every term. We used to say that it was published to improve the communication between members, and it was meant to be a place for members to express their concerns, ask questions, and stress their creative ability. But honestly, these are of course all lies. It’s pretty hard to tell how this idea really came up. Probably it’s because I was left out in the year book committee in high school even though I was in the art class, which was suppose to be the year book committee itself; or maybe it was those stupid frosh passion (come on, everybody had been a frosh once.) Anyway, so it was there in November 1995: my very first term in Waterloo, and one month after it was first purposed. If you have ever get hold on the first issue, you must agree that it was not the best publication you have ever seen. (okay, I admit: it’s due to the lack of time and experience.) But the quality improved dramatically ever since, especially after more qualified people joined in the team; those 40 hours marathons (it was a big deal in the first year;) and perhaps 10% off every course. There was once I truly believed that it would go on forever, and I can still find people reading it twenty years after I graduated. Unfortunately, putting this thing together is not an easy job, and I was not always there to protect it. Therefore, two years later when I was away for my co-op work term, the project was cancelled without even consulting me for the reason of limited budget.
This page is dedicated for our hard work, passion, lost marks, and memory that went away as AX vanished. At least, we know where those times had gone.
Why AnimeXpress? To come and think of it, "AnimeXpress" is not a brilliant name, especially compared to our amazing club name, CTRL-A (Club That Really Likes Anime.) If I remember correctly, it was about 3am. Mike, Candy, and I were still struggling to pull things together for the deadline on the next day when we suddenly realized that we had no name for this publication. "CTRL-B", "Anime World", "The CTRL-A Newsletter", and many other not-very-creative names were being considered, but we finally chose "AnimeXpress" because Mike was especially fond of The X-Files at the time, and the rest of us were too exhausted to object (Mike was the only person who had slept that day.) Months later, we realized that a column in one of the local anime magazines was also named AnimeExpress…. Maybe we were not the only non-creative ones after all.
