Released in the U.S. in September 98 by Buena Vista Home Entertainment, Kiki's Delivery Service is a delightful story about a 13 year old witch who goes off on her own to discover herself and her own special powers. Along with her black cat Jiji, she arrives at a lively city and decides that it is the perfect place for her. There, she meets a lot of interesting people: Hisono--a bakery owner, an artist, a couple of old ladies, and Tombo--a boy who dreams of flying. During her little adventures, Kiki identifies the challenges of growing up and realizes that all she needs is a little confidence to fit in and keep going.
This was another wonderful movie from Studio Ghibli. I watched the dubbed version and it was terrific (as you can expect from Buena Vista), and the animation quality was great . Artistically similar to "Whisper of the Heart" but more fast-paced, "Kiki's Delivery Service" is perfect for kids of all ages as well as for adults. Although it contains quite a bit of action and some comic-relief from the black cat. it can still seem slow-paced at times. I don't think that there's actually a major plot in the movie except for the fact that Kiki discovers her self. It's a "coming-of-age" kinda movie, I suppose. Many well-known actors had roles in the movie: Kirsten Dunst as Kiki, the late Phil Hartman (News Radio) as Jiji, Matthew Lawrence (Boy Meets World) as Tombo, comedian Janeane Garofalo, and Debbie Reynolds. Pretty much a movie that the whole entire family can enjoy.
