Hundreds of years ago, the spaceship Mesopotamia approaches the Planet Terra II. The ship explodes and a handful of male survivors manage to land on the planet's surface. Men are cloned to make up the world of Terra II, with the main countries ruled by the descenents of the few survivors. The only female faction is composed of androids called Marionettes, which are used for everyday chores. Marionettes are used only as objects until one fateful day....

A young man named Otaru Mamaya stumbles upon an old museum relating to the Mesopotamia and meets the marionette, Lime. A very hyperactive marionette, she is the only marionette capable of feeling emotions, until other

marionettes, Cherry and Bloodberry are soon awakened. Together they fight to protect their home country of Japoness from the evil Fuhrer Faust.

A very good anime series with funny and charming characters. Lime(who is played by Megumi Hayashibara, who is also known for playing Rei(Evangelion), Achika(Tenchi Muyo in Love) shares plenty of comparison with Nuku Nuku(Cat

Girl: Nuku Nuku) and other characters such as Hanagata are thrown in for very funny comic relief. The other  marionettes are great characters as well.

The animation rates from average to good, but I have seen better TV animation(namely Evangelion) but the comedy in well executed and the fight scenes are well choreographed. The same goes for the music, while average, the tone changes from playful to moody and classical on some episodes. Also the tone in first half of the series is very cheerful and happy, with a lot of light-hearted humor, but the latter half becomes serious and emotional. The series dives deep into the subject of the discovery of the complexity of emotions and love, which adds up to some truly tear-jerking moments. But the ending is also very emotional,(but with a pleasantly suprising outcome.)

Overall Saber Marionette J is a cute series and very much worth seeing to the very end. Get out and watch it now! (Don't forget to count how many times Otaru beats the snot out of Hanagata!)
