Hello, this is the Wushu Webring question of the month page. Please answere the questions in the following squares provided.

David Lau - 12/28/00 22:18:59
My Email:dragonlibruce@yahoo.com
styles learned: Nanchuan and weapons major, and Changchuan and gunshu
school: New Zealand International Wushu Council
answer: Nan styles emphasises leg strength, stamina, trunk flexibility, and explosive execution. Chang style require jumping ability, stamina, flexibility most, and also explosiveness, so therefore both styles are hard to do!!!

Comments:
When I chose to do nan styles is because it is easier to perform because it requires few jumping skills. This is important because in the world championships tournament, it is hard to win with changchuan because you must jump extremely high and the chinese usually waste all the others because they can jump up amazingly high. So Nanquan, I used to think, all you need is to perform it with spirit and there might be more of a chance to win. But after doing it for three years with the comtemporary wushu forms (competition forms) I still can't master the forms as well as I thought. So therefore there is no such thing as which is harder to do, I think both have its own difficulties.

answer: No style is better. Only stylists

Comments:
My sifu talks about which style is better. He thinks wushu is just a little more practical than karate. I think that the stylist is also the 'style' embodied. I dont look like I'm doing choy lei fut when I fight. I only do what I feel will work the be t.

answer: The difference between wushu and traditional kung fu is that wushu is a more flashy style that does not emphasizes on elf defence but looks better than traditional kung fu

Comments:
Wushu looks great in movies, but i think that there is nothing better than traditional kung fu for self defence...

styles learned: shaolin kung fu/wushu O Shin Chuen
school: Södermalms Shaolin Kung fu/Stockholms Wushu Accademy
answer: No belts and no difference in kung fu/wushu

Comments:
Belts take away what shaolin kung fu/wushu tries to accomplish...remove the pretentious elements in the training. We all start at some point and it is an evolution, not a step ladder to perfecting the art. It's comunal and not individualistic in the sense that we must compete for a belt but for personal achievment.

joshua durham - 02/21/00 21:04:29

Comments:
i believe the only true difference between traditional kung fu and modern wushu would have to be the choreography, having trained in both the only difference is that they techniques are done in a different order. if research was done people would find th t all the 32 step forms from changchuan (one of the modern versions) have been taken from the cha' chuan style. in fact several traditional styles such as choy lee fut and jow ga share forms with cha' chuan and modern wu shu, for example the 32 step form from today's chang chuan is actually tiger tail broadsword practiced by choy lee fut, jow ga and cha' chuan. lack of application and intent is an individual problem that occurs in all sorts of practioners as does lack of conditioning. people just seem t point out wushu because it has some flash to it, but if they looked a little closer they would see another form with definite martial applications.

answer: There is only one perfect Style already exist....

Comments:
AS FAR, MANY YEARS ALREADY COME, BUT THE ONLY PERFECT STYLE FOR US IS TO FIGHT IN A CLOSE DISTANCE, A SORT OF KUNG-FU SYSTEM EXECUTED IN A SHORT DISTANCE LIKE OUR ART CHI DIAN BUN (NATURAL ART OR LITERATURE AS TO MAKE IT SHORTEN) BUT IT CONTAINS DIRECT LO G KICKS PARTICULARLY INSTEAP SIDE KICKS WITH NO EXISTENCE OF ROUNDHOUSE. OUR STYLE LOOKS LIKE THOSE IN WINGCHUN WHEN OUR OPPONENT IS EXTREMELY CLOSE, AND IT LOOK LIKE THOSE OF BRUCE LEE DISTANCE FIGHTS..... TODAY IS ALREADY IN THE YEAR 2000.... NOTE: KUNG-FU STARTS IN THE ANIMAL FORM MANNER, THEN HUMAN FORM WHERE SOFT DEFEATS HARD STYLES, AND IN THE END - THERE COMES THE SCIENTIFIC FORM OF MARTIAL KUNG FU AND NOTHING MORE THAT COMES, SO, THE PERFECT KUNGFU STYLE THAT SUITS FOR THIS CENTURY IS THE SCIE TIFIC FORM OF KUNGFU LIKE THOSE OF WINGCHUN IF YOU ARE FAMILIAR WITH IT, BUT OUR STYLE IS NOT THOSE OF SHAOLIN BASED WINGCHUN BUT OUR STYLE IS IN TAOIST CHI DIAN BUN FROM HONGKONG MIGRATED TO MANILA IN PHILIPPINE EINI(I DONT KNOW THE CORRECT SPELLING OF M INSTRUCTORS SCHOOL) BUT MY INSTRUCTOR TEACH US HERE ON ILOILO AND THE MOVEMENT OF CHI DIAN BUN REALLY LOOKS LIKE THOSE OF WING CHUN,

Great Idea for a site!!!! The difference between the uses and meanings of the words Kung Fu and Wu Shu within the context of the question posed is defineable only by one's self for one's self. Their meanings differ in interpretation. One can take the l teral translation of the words or the meaning of the words can be clouded by their personal experiences or beliefs. This is a great question but one that is truly hard to answer..........in the meantime stretch, train, practice and enjoy the experience hat is Wu Shu.

I think the primary difference between contemporary wushu and traditional kung fu is simple: application. Traditional kung fu is about fighting. Most schools of kung fu still at least pretend to be all about self defense. Wushu, on the other hand, is abou athletecism, sport, and competition. Which is better? Neither, I get a kick (ahem, 'scuse the bad humor) out of both. I practice kung fu for defense and wushu for fun.

I just wanna say that i simply LOVE wushu!!!!! YES!!!!!! and i'm glad that i've found this website. By the way, to solve the stiffness problem, one has to feel extremely composed, relaxing all tensions within the body, and yet transferring all energy outwards instead of tensing up the whole body. This error is most often committed by new wushu learners One cannot be too impatient when mastering the essence of wushu. It takes time and perserverance. Remember to put your heart (and some brains) into training to obtain optimum results. No pain, no gain.

The difference between wushu and kungfu is simple. The word kungfu means a learned skill or ability through hard work. So anyone can have good kungfu. However many people like to use kungfu for the term of traditional wushu. Wushu is just a generic term for all martial arts of China. It's like an umbr lla and under this umbrella falls all Chinese martial arts. Contemporary wushu began after the cultural revolution of China and yes it was geared more toward sport but yet in my opinion loses none of the fighting applications of traditional wushu ( ok ma be a little :) i guess ill stop now before i bore everyone... please anyone correct me if you think im wrong in anyway.. i would appreciate it...

4. I always liked to think that WuShu is more a sport than Kung-fu (which seems more designed for actual combat). Geared towards competition, WuShu is the blending of many types of Kung-fu into common styles to be shared universally between all students and teachers.

1.- Stretch, stretch and stretch... Ask two or three pals to pull your legs...... 2.- Both are hard to achieve. 3 - a) Nangun is a nice compilation of all southern stick techniques. Nandao is a nice invention including some southern weapons characteristics under a nanquan frame. Taijijian, I can't tell about that one. 3 - b) The 'A' level compulsary are some higher level combinations required to be included inside the optional routines for chinese national tournaments. There are for each category and sex, a set of different movement combinations. They were necesary in rder to help the judges since all competitors were not doing any major mistakes before, making it to hard to judge!

I would say that they should stretch like mad until they can achieve basic flexibility for changquan. You can't exactly condemn someone to doing something they don't want to do, at least not outside of China (or some other competition heavy environment). If they don't put their heart into it, it's going to be horrible. Of course they should try nanquan out, but if they absolutely hate it, don't push them. That's my $0.02.
