Pinnacle Mountain can be seen in the distance. Please see my other related Postcards.
This card is from the very early 30s. In April of 1931, my Aunt Myrtle went on a Motor Coach tour from Troutman, NC to California and back. All along her tour she collected postcards, road maps, stickers, etc. I was the executor of her estate and found a
arge Southern Pacific Railroad envelope in one of her drawers. In the envelope was everything she collected on her trip - post cards, maps, menus, stickers, etc. It probably has been opened very few times since her return in 1931.
The Post Cards that I will be selling over the next few weeks or months are from that envelope. These cards are a treasure that may never be offered again once they are sold.

1931 Postcard Cudjos Cave Entrance and Shop

The location of this cave appears to be at the intersection of the three (3) states near Middlesboro, TN. Either this cave no longer exists or the name has been changed. I cannot locate it anywhere in the net.
If you collect Cave or Cavern Postcards, this may be a unique opportunity.

This information was provided by another postcard collector. Now I know why I was unable to locate any information on Cujo Cave on the internet or in the directory. I believe that it is worthy of posting to the item here on eBay. ~ ~~~ Thought you might e
joy some more info on Cujo Cave. It does still exist and is now contained within the borders of Cumberland Gap National Historical Park. It is no longer open to the public. The cave is under going a "renovation" at this time. Hope fully it will be opened
o the public at a future time. The store was destroyed/sold by the park service about five years ago, I believe as part of the preparation for the new road which goes through Cumberland Gap( the mountain) rather than forcing folks to drive around the moun
ain. I know all this info not because I have ever been in the cave, but because one of my friends works for the National Park Service as a cave resource manager. Lucky him he gets to go in there all the time! Great post card! Great story!

1931 Gate City Auto Camp Richfield PostCard
On Route 66 and Route 99
What makes the Gate City Auto Camp postcard valuable? (Pictures at left of text.)
1. Early Route 66 cards, especially from the 20s and 30's are quite scarce.
2. This card has the U.S. Highway shield shown clearly on the face (Both U.S. 99 and U.S. 66) which where both new highways as of 1926.
3. This card is of interest to collectors of Petromobilia (gas station stuff) as half of the picture is of a Richfield Gas Station including a Visible Pump. Visible pumps are the gasoline pumps where the gasoline is typically hand pumped from a tank up in
o the glass top until the number of gallons desired reaches that mark inside the glass top. Then the gasoline is gravity fed into the vehicle. Nifty Huh? Didn't have to worry about the electricity going out or Y2K.
4. Half of the picture is of a Cottage Camp. Cottage camps were the first real lodgings designed for the automobile traveler. Hotels were built in the cities near the railroad depots and cost more than many automobile travelers wanted to pay. Most of the
amps began by providing a place to tent camp with your vehicle and later added cottages or cabins (however you prefer to call them) to sleep in. Little by little they kept adding amenities from central toilets and bathing facilities to having some cabins
ith facilities inside them. Well one day, someone decided to put a roof over the space between the cabins and call them car ports and then someone decided to make another room out of the carport and now all these rooms were connected and thus many cottage
camps turned into the Motels of the late 1940s and 50s. Today you can still find motels that, if you investigate closely, began as a line of cabins.
The following is the printed text: Postcard - Gate City Auto Camp, San Bernardino, CA Richfield - The Gasoline Of Power On US Route 66. The postcard's reverse is divided and printed in light green ink.
Printed vertically in the center is: Q U A L I T Y. Printed vertically in the left edge is: Pub. By B. R. Montgomery Riverside, California.
The information in the upper left corner is as follows: Opposite the national Orange Show * Phone 42145 * H. A. Douglas, Mgr. * Gate City Auto Camp * Mill and E. Streets, San Bernardino Our cabins are new and modern. Singles and doubles, with or without b
ths. Simmons beds. Good mattresses. Running water in every cabin, private toilets. Hot and cold showers. Gas ranges, plates and heaters. Electricity. Complete grocery in connection. Ice depot. Children's playground. Big shade trees. Only a short distance
rom the heart of the city. Standard brands of gasoline and oils. Free air, water, crankcase and battery service. "You will enjoy your visit here."
As you can see from the text on the card, I would suspect that the private toilets and showers are not inside the cabins. Hey, Where are the radio, TV and air-conditioning? What, no MTV? Magic Fingers? For those of you who are two young, Magic Fingers was
an entire bed vibrator that provided more of a violent shaking rather than a soothing massage.
This is really a great card as it shows an important part of the lodging and service for the United States automobile traveler at the beginning of the Federal Highway system about 1926. As you can see from the writing, these were total service facilities.
The Gate City Auto Camp is listed in the 1920s Conoco Cottage Camp Manual, List 2 for the Pacific SW. In this publication they listed the Gate City on U.S. Highway 99, having 30 cottages at $1.00 and up. Conoco was a big name in travel and route guides up
through the 1950s. San Bernardino had quite a number of cottage camps listed in this guide, so competition for the auto traveler must have been fierce. Gate City with 30 cottages was the largest. The names of these places of lodging often change over the
ears and most often progress eliminates them forever.
Viewing an original auto camp from the 1920s and 20s is quite a treat and very few remain today. As to price, a $40 bid is not unreasonable since the card can be of interest to quite a wide range of collectors. It is a wonderful old Postcard that shows an
old Richfield Service Station.
In the envelope were several Gate City Auto Camp post cards. These cards are a treasure that may never be offered again once they are sold. Her photo, taken du
ing this trip, is at the left.
Comments on the condition of this Postcard: This Postcard is unused and is in near mint condition on the front. There is some very light rubbing on the corners (see the scan). The back of the card seems to be coated with come type of white coating with t
e green ink printed over. There is some slight flaking of the coating in the upper left and upper right of the card causing a small portion of the green printing to be missing. Again, see the scan and ask for a bigger scan if you want. Buy with confidence
