About Mizuno Ami/Sailor Mercury

'Ami', meaning Beauty. 'Mizu', water. 'no', a Japanese possessive modifier. Mizuno Ami (Amy Anderson), "Beauty of the Waters", also known as Sailor Mercury, is an only child of divorced parents. She lives with her mother, who is a doctor, in a mansion in Minato-Ku. Her father is a painter who often sends her paintings in place of letters. We first see Ami-chan (age 14) in her second year of Junior High School (Class 5) at Juuban (Crossroads) J.H. and ends up following her through 5 seasons of Sailormoon to age 17 at Juuban High. Often introvertive, she works extremely hard and excels in all her classes, hoping one day to be a doctor like her mother. It is that lack of social experience which often lead her to quite a few funny but embarassing episodes of saying the wrong thing at the wrong time.

Sailor Mercury Cutout

As Sailor Mercury, she derives her powers from the element of water. Her special attacks involves its use, either in a mist for camouflage or a solid to freeze. Though her powers are the least aggressive of all the senshis (since it's not until "Aqua Rhapsody" in the 4th season when she does have an "offensive" attack), she makes up for it with her brains, a special super mini computer (given to her by the ever faithful Luna), as well as an all purpose analyzing VR visor. Where brute strength and power often fail the senshis, she is often the factor which leads them to victory by pointing out their enemies' weaknesses or a bit of strategy.

Aside from the other senshis, only one other person knows of Sailor Mercury's identity, Urawa Ryo (Greg). As one of the nijizuishou (rainbow crystal) carriers, his psychic abilities revealed to him Ami-chan's other self. Though the two episodes (from Sailormoon) in which he appears are suggestive of mutual attraction, their relationship is not well established nor fully realized. (Note: Ryo does not appear in SailormoonR or SailormoonS at all, and I have yet to finish SailormoonSS or start Sailormoon SailorStars).

The voice actresses who bring our beloved Ami to life are Karen Bernstein (North American Version) and Hisakawa Aya (Japanese Version).

FRAME USERS: Press the "Stop" button on your browser before playing this clip so Ami doesn't speak over the background music. It's not necessary, but recommended if you want to hear her as clearly as she should be heard :P Note: You can restart the background music by refreshing the "Menu Bar" frame.
