Mariko is a martial arts cheerleader. While cheerleading a volleyball
match between Furinkan High and her school (Youth College), she defeated
the Furinkan High team by using her "Sure kill baton"
skill, which involves the flinging of batons (what did you expect?). Too
bad for her, Akane was on the losing team. Ranma had the chance to
avenge Akane when an estranged Mariko challenged Ran-Chan to a duel (She
saw her guy Tatewaki chasing Ran-Chan). The bet was to cheerlead
Tatewaki so that he would win in his Kendo competition against the Youth
College. To do this, Ran-Chan and Mariko tried to make palpable their affections
to Kunou. In theory, this would send him to new levels of exuberance,
thereby increasing his chance of victory. Mariko however, actually
had truely fallen for Tatewaki, so it was no difficulty for her to express her
emotions (unlike Ran-Chan). She even went to the extent of drugging her own school's Kendo
team. Luckily, Akane decided to do battle for the drugged Kendo team. Ultimately,
Tatewaki lost head over heels (literally) and a beleaguered Mariko was
forced to abandon her feelings for Tatewaki. She then got around to a new task -
to cheer her self-confidence back.
