A phenomenon called "mobile text messaging" has changed the way people communicate specially in the Philippines. I remember a few years back, in the place where I grew up, we didn't even have a landline telephone. Mobile phones were considered as gadgets for the rich and the executives. Nowadays, almost everybody own at least one. They come in different cool shapes and sizes. The coolest part of owning a mobile phone in the Philippines is "text messaging" and best part is it costs almost next to nothing. There are some limitations though. The 160-character limit per message is one of them. This is where creativity comes in. Artful messages, jokes, quotes and text arts (teddy bears, airplanes, cars, flowers, and some type of animations) are being squeezed in the phones' tiny screens. People find ways to abbreviate words in ways English teachers couldn't imagine. But hey, if it doesn't fit you must abbreviate. If you are having a bad day, one message can change it all. Here are some "text messages" that were forwarded to me by one of my friends (through e-mail, by the way). They certainly made my day when I was reading them. I hope they will do the same to you. Enjoy!

"Text Messages" from the Philippines

Hi, baby! How's my cute darling? How I've missed you. I miss kissing and cuddling and smelling you. How's your dinner? Kumain ka na ba? Nabusog ka ba? Naubos mo bang lahat ang Pedigree?

Good morning. Nakasalubong ko ang guardian angel mo just now. Ang sabi niya, ang cute-cute mo raw. Binatukan ko nga. Ang aga-aga, lasing na! Pagsabihan mo 'yan.

When you feel left out and all alone, just try to close your eyes for a moment and think of me. Afterwards, you will suddenly smile and say text ko nga 'yung cute na 'yun.

When someone says you're ugly, aba! Tangina na nila, I say. Nakikita na, sinasabi pa!

I asked God for a candle and the sun was given to me. I asked for a glass of water and the sea was given to me. I asked for a cute friend and you were given to me. Anak ng pusa! Walang tumama!

Binubugbog ako dahil sabi ko, cute ka. Now I've learned my lesson not to tell a lie... Take care, cute! Bog! Aray! Tama na po!

Between a thousand yesterdays and a million tomorrows, there is only one today. And I wouldn't let this day pass by without saying this to you... Ang CUTE ko! Grabe...

Psst... Cute! Yes, you!!! You're smiling again. Because I told you you're cute. Hay... Sometimes we need to lie just to make someone smile.

I look at the sky... The sky is beautiful... I look at you... I... I... I look at the sky na lang ulit.

What I love about you is your killer smile, your cute dimples, your gorgeous eyes, your cute face, your... Ay, ay, ay!!! Teka lang, sorry. Wrong message pala. Hindi pala sa iyo 'yun. Hello lang pala ang sasabihin ko sa iyo.

Pasalamat ka, hindi ka pwedeng batukan, hindi ka pwedeng tadyakan. In short, hindi ka puwedeng saktan. Cruelty to animals is now a crime. Buti ka pa, may proteksyon.

Thanks to Joey Sunga for this idea. Text messaging gain quite a popularity in the Philippines. It's convenient, it's affordable and most of all it's fun. I wonder why it is not as popular in the U.S. Ahh yes, I know why... the phone companies charge monthy fee for the service... I think you'll be lucky if you know two people who subscribe for the service so there's no point of having it here... or maybe were just too busy for text messaging... Nooooottttt!

Get into the action. You can "text" your friends and family for free. Just go to unimobile.com
