CAT BOOKS
- CATWATCHING - by Desmond Morris - Ebury Press
Remember Morris the author of 'The Naked Ape'? In this book he describes, with down to earth words, the main behavior of cats and a few general matters about them. Organized in very short chapters, each answering a typical question, it is a very enjoyable reading!
A very good introduction to how to know the real cat inside your cat!
- CATS, THE VISUAL GUIDE- by David Alberton - DK
A visual guide to over 250 cat breeds. Attractively presented with good descriptive pictures of each breed, it is a good introduction to the diversity of breeds. It is not a catalog of breed standards but gives accurate description and reliable information.
- COMPLETE CAT CARE MANUAL - by Andrew Edney - DK
There are certainly other valuable books for cat care and health, but we like this one as it is visually very explicit by a lot of very good photos and illustrations. The author is a veterinarian and delivers very good tips on the care of the healthy cat as well.
Any responsible cat owner should have a book covering these subjects; it does NOT replace the vet but will help you for small problems or prevent a loss of control of the situation in case of serious trouble.
We agree with Mr Edney: whenever possible a cat should have real food a few days a week, despite the too easy convenience of dry or canned food.
- CATS IN THE SUN - by Hans Sylvester - Chronicle Books (for USA edition)
High standard pictures by the German photographer specialized in travel photography. The book gathers about 150 photos in large format of cats living on the streets of 3 Greek Islands of the Cyclades Archipelago.
The art of the photographer conveys superbly the atmosphere of these Greek Islands and renders a true homage to these cats. There is none of the unnecessary sentimentalism so frequently founded in cats photography. A great book!
- CATS AT WORK - by R. Gray and S.Robinson - Abbeville Press
Theme book most probably artificially arranged for its photos, that in my opinion is not 'genuine' but smells a lot like Madison Avenue. The result however is pleasant and the cats seen in the environment where we humans have forced them to live are amusing and attractive. There is no degradation of cats' dignity in these photos and this small book can easily be a very good family book. Entertaining and well done.
The same publishing company sells a nice 1997 wall calendar with photos in larger sizes taken from the book.
- CAT COLLECTIBLES - by Pauline Flick - Wallace Homestead
Have you observed how quick cat lovers can be driven to catmania? Well this book is a good illustration of the phenomena: objects, artifacts, toys all illustrated with cats are presented in this interesting book. You will find all kind of objects collected with cats as a theme. The style of these collections go from bad taste to real art, from naive to kitsch.
Amusing and informative with lots of very good illustrations.
- INTERNET FOR CATS - by Judy Heim - No Starch Press
Bubbles the cat invites you to discover the Net. During the tour you will find basics about what the WEB, the News or e-mail Lists can offer cats and their owners. Humor and light writing support this pleasant book. The author keeps a Website about the book and other cat related matters
