INTRODUCTION TO MIDI
MIDI stands for Musical Instruments Digital
Interface. This international standard for digital music was establishedin
1982. It specifies the cabling and hardware required for connecting electronic
musical instruments and computer systems. MIDI also specifies a communication
protocol for passing data from one MIDI device to another.
Any musical instrument can become a MIDI device
by having the correct hardware interfaces and MIDI messages processing
capabilities. Devices communicate with each other by sending messages which
are digital representations of a musical score. MIDI data may include items
such as sequences of notes, timings, instrument designations and volume
settings.
The standard Multimedia platform can play MIDI
files through either internal or external synthesizers. External MIDI devices
are connected to the computer via the sound card's MIDI port. MIDI expands
the audio options available when developing multimedia. Use of MIDI is
attractive because MIDI files require minimal storage space compared to
digitized audio files, such as .WAV files.
How MIDI works?
MIDI translates a predefined set of performance
events at one instrument, called the master controller, into digital messages
that are sent to other devices over a low-speed serial link operating at
31.25 kbps - about twice the speed of a v.32bis modem. To make it easy
to keep musical information going where it should, these events are encoded
on any of 16 independent logical channels within the MIDI data stream.
A synthesizer receiving this incoming data stream responds by playing music.
