DB Stuff in the US!

So, you're the ultimate DB buff, and you need some DB stuff. Well, the popularity of DBZ bodes well for merchandising.

How popular is it? According to a VIZ ad (March), the TV show was the "#1 animated TV series among US teens." FUNimation points out that the video "Arrival" rose to #18 on Billboard's video sales report. Furthermore, the manga topped the best-seller chart (based on pre-orders compiled by Diamond Distribution company) for America in May 1998. DRAGON BALL Z # 3 and DRAGON BALL # 3, each ranked in at #1 and #2, respectively. (Check out the Viz-J-pop site.)

Ergo, with this success, product licenses have followed. Most of these products can be found in Canada, as well. Here's some of the stuff:

BOOKS AND VIDEOS

*DB and DBZ English version comic books (Viz Communications, $2.95 / $4.00 CAN)

US DBZ comic book

English translated versions of the manga have been released!!!!! (About time) They have simultaneously released both DB and DBZ comics, coming out monthly (32 pages at a time, in original b&w). DB is a 12-issue monthly series, and DBZ is a 9-issue monthly series. The 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th issues of DB and DBZ should be out already.

US DB comic book I think they have done a pretty good job with the production. The translations are fairly accurate, the editing is very good, and the presentation is cool. They chose some nice picts for the cover.

In keeping with the tradition of Japanese Manga, the editors have decided to let the books read from right to left, so the books open opposite from western-style books. Funny thing is, this didn't immediately occur to me until someone pointed it out to me. In my opinion, this is much better than "flipping" the pictures, in which the images are inverted so they read left to right, western-style. Flipped versions of manga, like the French edition of DB, give the pictures a weird skew to them.

For more info about these releases, check out the Viz-J-Pop site!

CARDS
^ Back to Top

* DB Chromium Trading Cards (JPP/Amada, about 3.00)
These come in packs of 6, including 1 rainbow-colored card. These maybe hard to find now.

US DB Cards

* DBZ Trading Cards (JPP/Amada, about 2.75)
These cards come in packs of 10, including 1 reflective, prismatic card.

JPP has released a second series for these cards, and this time, each pack contains 9 regular cards and 1 gold, metallic card.

US DBZ Cards

* CardUpps (JPP/Amada)
As far as I know, CardUpps come with a number of trading cards, a plastic case to carry them in, plus some device to stand them up.

* DBZ CardZillion (Bandai of America, 0.25 ea.)
Unfortunately, the release of these cards seems to have been cancelled for the U.S. These cards, called CardZillions, were to have been basically an American form of Carddass. They were to be solds for a quarter each in CardZillion machines (they look just like Carddass machines) located in Toy's "R" Us stores.

The plan seemed to have been to release 42 cards per series, and a new series released each month. They could have been used to play games, just like Carddass. The cards that Bandai has issued include Sailor Moon, Power Rangers Turbo, Beetle Borgs, DigiMon, and other cards.

* DBZ Ani-Mayhem Cards (Ani-Mayhem / Pioneer Entertainment, 70-card starter deck: 8.98, booster pack: 1.98) Released August 5.
These are special game cards you can use to play by yourself or with up to 10 people. I suppose they are like Magic Cards. However, these provide an "interactive simulation" of the world of Japanese Animation. Ani-Mayhem has released a number of sets that already mix a number of different anime series. However, for Dragon Ball, they released a whole set devoted to it, over 220 cards. They are fully compatible with the other sets, Set 0 and Set 1. Animayhem

* DBZ Standees (JPP/Amada, about 3.00)
Standee These are 2 dimensional relief figures of DBZ characters. You basically snap them out of the plastic flanges and insert them into a piece that allows the figure to stand up. You can color them to your taste. The package also comes with 3 trading cards.

* DBZ Body Tattoos (JPP/Amada, about 2.80)
Three body tattoos, total of 10 designs, applied by using water.

Sticker of your favorite DBZ characters. 'Nuff said.

* DBZ T shirts (Olaes, about 15.00)
More than 8 different varieties available

* DBZ Action Figures (Bandai)

Apparently, Bandai has released a number of different types of action figures in North America. However, a cursory search by Buu at Toys "R" Us stores, supposedly a main carrier of DBZ merchandise, in Los Angeles, New Jersey, and New York has not revealed any DBZ figures. But, I have seen them (US release figures) in a shop that handles comics/manga/anime. Also, it is possible to find them on the web.

Figures

* DB Battle Figures
Probably hard to find now. These small figures include "Staff Slashing Goku," "Fast Kicking Kuririn," and "Sword Swinging Yamcha."

* DBZ Sunglasses (Dorda Toys, about 5.90)
Sunglasses that sport your favorite character, attached to the bridge of the glasses. Piccolo, Vegeta, Goku, and Gohan available.

* DBZ Finger Puppets (Dorda Toys, about 4.90)
These are small thingamabobs that you put on your fingers that bounce back and forth, I suppose. The figures are "twistable." Again, Piccolo, Vegeta, Goku, and Gohan available.

* DBZ Skateboard Figures (Dorda Toys, about 5.90)
These are plastic figures that are affixed to a small, pull-back "skateboard." You just pull them back and let go to see them roll away. The figures are 4.5 in. "movable" figures and include Piccolo, Vegeta, Goku, and Gohan.

* DBZ Bubble Buddies (Dorda Toys)
????? ^_^;; For pictures of these toys from Dorda, check out Dorda Toys. (URL courtesy of Sharon H.)
