Vivian Chow, born on November 20, 1967, comes from a family of one child. Vivian grew up in a poor environment with her mother in Hong Kong. However, this did not darken her spirit. Rather, this encouraged her to work hard and to love others. Vivian's talents and interest in music probably began when she was very young. Vivian recalls dreaming about owning a piano when she was very little. Since her family was poor, she knew she could never own a piano. But her mother loved her dearly and saved enough money to buy Vivian the piano. Vivian finds the day her mother buying her a piano the happiest moments in her life, which she treasures deep in her heart.
Vivian worked for RTHK (a Hong Kong radio station) as a DJ (disk jockey) after she first made her appearance in the HK entertainment industry in the HK New Singers Competition. She recalls a judge at the Competition telling her to wear contact lenses rather than her thick glasses. This change has helped bring out the sparkle in her eyes. Vivian won second place in the Competition, which helped her start her entertainment career. Her success in winning the Competition ensured her popularity in the film industry. Her first acting role was in Heart To Hearts. Immediately, Vivian's popularity soared. In 1988, Vivian signed a contract with SanCity Records Ltd. and released her first official album with the hit single, 台下女主角 ("Toi Hah Neuih Jyu Gok"), in 1990. Afterwards, Vivian solely pursued her dream as a singer.
In 1991, after only two albums, Vivian left SanCity Records Ltd. and signed with PolyGram Records Ltd. and released A Long and Lasting Love. Vivian's popularity soared ever greatly with PolyGram. Her image and singing improved greatly as she continued her career with PolyGram.
In 1992, Vivian worked in conjunction with YES Communications Ltd., Hong Kong, to promote idol merchandise, which is now a major industry in Hong Kong. Idol merchandise consists of posters, postcards, clothing, pencils, rulers, and other types of stationary. Vivian also made frequent appearances in YES! Idol, a magazine devoted to HK singers and actors/actresses, which became a hit when Vivian appeared in its first few issues. In addition, Vivian released her personal photo album, "Dreams", in 1992. Ever since, Vivian has continued to release an annual photo book. In 1993, she released "Secrets"; and in 1994 she released "Vivians". Vivian has also opened her very own YES! Station, a franchise in Hong Kong devoted to selling gifts and idol merchandise.
In 1993, Vivian entered the Taiwan market with the immediate hit Mandarin album Rumors. Vivian was able to learn Mandarin in a very short period of time. Vivian said she learned Mandarin from her friends by frequently speaking it with them. Within a short period of time, Vivian became the most popular female singer in Taiwan. Vivian's sweet personality was adored by thousands of fans. She made special appearances on television specials in both Taiwan and Hong Kong.
In 1994, Vivian had her very first individual concert in Hong Kong, which consisted of four shows (Oct.7-8, 14-15). In addition, Vivian had her first individual concert in Taiwan. The concerts were a success, which gave her confidence to start her worldwide tour in 1995. Vivian toured major cities in North America in September 1995. In addition, she went to other places, such as Singapore.
In 1995, Vivian was able to release her first japanese single, Wakeful Night, in Japan. In the same year, Vivian also released her first two laser discs. Her first disc was a recording of her first individual concert in Hong Kong in 1994 (available in karaoke and concert version). The other disc was a karaoke video disc featuring her past music videos. In August, Vivian also started filming her fourth movie, A Stage of Turbulence, for Hong Kong's TVB International Ltd.
Over the years, Vivian has worked hard; and she has starred in numerous films and has released numerous hit albums. Vivian's success is unlike many artists, who rely on constant changes in their appearance and singing style to attract listeners. Rather, Vivian relies on her true spirit and heart. She has received great praise and compliments on her character and personality by the media and others who have worked with her. Vivian has always been herself by keeping her beliefs and principles. Vivian has remained her innocent and adorable self; a truly beautiful girl we love and dream about...
