The grand authority on Chinese calligraphy is China the Beautiful, which focuses on Chinese culture and is very informative. There's a great art gallery on Chinese calligraphy, too. And bless Dr Pei, who runs this site, for encouraging me.

Dr Siu-Leung Lee has just written to me about his Chinese Calligraphy site. There is a wealth of information brimming with authority on this site, as well as an art gallery of definitive works of calligraphy. I have been linking to Dr Lee's commentary on the Lanting Xu for some time, under the misconception that it was Dr Pei's -- my hearty apologies!

Berkeley has a collection of rubbings. Some is straight calligraphy, and I think some others are calligraphy written to form pictures.

Some beautiful sites on the calligraphy of other cultures:

Arabic calligraphy has begun to interest me recently. Islamic & Arabic arts and architecture is a high-tech page with a classic design, and graphics that I solemnly pay homage to. Arabic Calligraphy is the really relevant part of the site. Be warned, this site is graphics-heavy and more -- could take a while to arrive.

Western calligraphy, as I politically incorrectly term it, is represented all over the Net. I recommend the Vellum Gallery of Calligraphy, Illumination, and Letter Arts for the sheer beauty of its samples, though I hope they'll expand their theory sections. Its links of interest are both comprehensive and selective.

I have avoided linking to personal artists' sites in the past, but Rob Leuschke's Alphabytes is worth visiting, both for its entrancing design and its links relating to calligraphy and lettering, graphics and typography.

Do you know about a calligraphy site that should be here? Tell me about it!
