The young blond pushed the door open violently and ran
into the lobby opf the elegant apartment complex. Drenched
through and through from the rain, her white tank top and jeans
clung to her like a second skin.
Heaving slightly from the run and her fear of the
weather, the woman ran a hand through her now stringy hair. She
glanced around the empty lobby and sighed in relief. Heading
towards the elevator, she caught sight of her reflection in the
mirror.
"Boy am I a mess." She muttered. Pressing the small up
arrow button, she tapped her foot inpatiently as she waited for
the silver doors to open.
With a sharp ding, the shiny doors slid open and Tsukino
Usagi stepped in.
The ride up seemeed to take forever, the knots in her
stomach never letting her forget why she was there. Her mind
began to drift to the series of events that had led her to this
point in her life.
FLASHBACK
"No way Mamo-chan! I want a real date to prom, not my
best friend!"
"Come on Usagi, I'll be your real date." Mamoru smiled at
her.
"But Sano's on his way here now." Usagi exclaimed.
"Forget Sano. Usagi, I love you."
"Oh Mamo-chan." Usagi giggled. "Now get out so I can
get ready!"
END FLASHBACK
Shivering, Usagi wrapped her arms around herself trying
to keep warm. Goose bumps popped up on her pale skin, and Usagi
leaned against the cool metal of the inside of the elevator.
"Mamo-chan..." She whispered.
FLASHBACK
"What do you mean 'no'?" Usagi asked, looking at Mamoru
increduosly.
"No, Usa, no. You can't go out with him." Mamoru
repeated.
"Mamo-chan! I'm nineteen! I'm in university. I'm old
enough to take care of myself." Usagi wailed.
"Are you?" Mamoru asked, suddenly serious. "Are you,
Usa?"
END FLASHBACK
Water was dripping off her skin and hair, soaking the
carpet in the elevator. Usagi's eyelids covered the crystal
blue of her eyes. Her delicate pink lips were slightly open,
allowing air to pass.
The doors opened and Usagi stepped out. Taking a deep
breath, she headed down the long hallway. Stopping infront of
the door with the number 1102, Usagi lifted her hand to knock.
FLASHBACK
"Mamo-chan, you can't dictate my life!" Usagi cried.
"I'm not dictating. I'm trying to protect you." Mamoru
replied.
"Protect me? Protect me from what?! Reality? You can't
do that, Mamoru. Life happens."
"Usagi..." Mamoru's eyes were filled with hurt.
"I can't deal with this Mamoru! I thought you were my
friend." Usagi slammed the door hard behind her.
"Usagi, I love you..." Mamoru whispered to the space
where she had once stood.
END FLASHBACK
The knock resounded through the apartment and Usagi
prayed he was home. She knew she wouldn't have the courage to
go there again.
FLASHBACK
"Mamo-chan." Usagi spoke quietly.
"Usagi! Where are you?" His voice came frantic over the
phone.
"I'm going Mamo-chan. Ryoga and I are eloping. I wanted
you to know. Good-bye Mamo-chan."
"No! Usagi, no! Nothing good can come of this." Mamoru
cried.
"Mamo-chan..." Usagi sighed.
"Usa... Usako, if you ever fall..." Mamoru began.
"Good bye, Mamo-chan." Usagi slammed the phone down.
"If you ever fall, I'll catch you." He finished.
END FLASHBACK
Slowly the door opened and Usagi's eyes dropped to the
carpet, and she saw his slippered feet.
"Usagi!"
Her head shot up to look at him, and she broke. Tears
flew down her cheeks and Usagi literally crampled in front of
him.
"Mamo-chan..." She sobbed.
"Usagi! Usagi, what's wrong?" Mamoru gathered the
drenched woman in his arms, lifting her effortlessly into his
apartment. Setting her on the couch, Mamoru grabbed a towel and
wrapped it around her.
"Mamo-chan... Mamo-chan..." She sobbed. Mamoru hugged
her tightly, trying to warm her.
"Oh Mamo-chan! You were right! You were right..." She
sobbed into his chest.
"What are you talking about, Usa?" Mamoru asked.
"You were right... Ryoga... Nothing good..." She
continued to sob.
"What do you mean? Did you...?"
"No... We never... never married... We were going
to... we... were... Oh Mamo-chan! He left me!"
"What?! Why?" Mamoru asked.
"I fell, Mamo-chan. You were right and I fell." She
sobbed.
"Usako... It's okay Usako." Mamoru soothed. "Poor
Usako..."
Pulling away, Usagi cast her eyes away.
"Mamo-chan... I'm pregnant."
EPILOGUE
"Mommy! Mommy watch me!" Little Yuki called.
"I'm watching, dearest." Usagi smiled at her daughter.
Resting one hand on her swollen belly, the sun caught the
glistening band of gold on her finger.
"What is little Yuki-chan up to?" Mamoru asked.
"Oh Daddy! You watch too!"
The joyful laughter filled the apartment as the sunshine
flooded over the happy family.
