The alarm clock went off, and Usagi smashed her hand down, hitting the
button to silence it. Groaning, she slowly sat up in her bed and stretched.
It was Monday morning, but Usagi wasn't ready for a new week.
"Hey Luna." Usagi mumbled to her cat as she made her way to the bathroom for
her ritual morning shower.
By the time she was ready to leave for work, she was almost late. Usagi ran
to the elevator of her apartment building with her backpack in hand.
"Hold the elevator!" She shouted. A young man in a buisness suit looked up
and smiled at her, before holding the elevator doors open.
"Thanks." Usagi smiled at him and waited patiently for the elevator to reach
the ground floor.
"Excuse me? I realize this is kind of abrupt, but are you free tonight?
Maybe we can get a drink?" The young man asked.
"I'm sorry... I'm kinda seeing someone." With an apologetic smile, Usagi
raced out to her car in an attempt not to be late for work.
~~
Usagi glanced at her watch, wondering where Mamoru and Yuki were. She had to
start her class soon, and everyone, but Yuki, was there. She sighed as the
warning bell rang, and started longingly at the door.
She was afraid Mamoru didn't feel the same way she did. She thought maybe
she was rushing things, telling him she loved him.
'But I do! I really do!' She exclaimed to herself. 'And he's the one who
told me he can't be having casual flings... Was he trying to tell me to
get lost?'
Tears sprang to Usagi's eyes as she realized that maybe Mamoru didn't love
her, and that maybe she scared him away.
Usagi closed her eyes briefly, trying to collect herself. Just as she was
turning towards her class to get everyone's attention, her classroom door
was flung open. It was Yuki, but she was alone.
"I'm sorry I'm late, Tsukino-sensei." Yuki was a bit breathless and was
holding a small white envelope in her hand. "This is for you."
Usagi accepted the envelope with a slight nod, before looking down at it.
Usako was scripted across it in handwriting that was distinctly Mamoru.
Usagi realized that she was trembling, and that her class was looking at
her expectantly. Yuki had deposited her bag and jacket at the back of the
room, and was looking at Usagi carefully.
Yuki had no clue as to what had transpired between her Mamo-chan and her
teacher, but she knew Mamoru had been a mess ever since he picked Yuki up
late Sunday night. She had wanted to ask if Usagi was mad at him, but
thought better of it. Now she saw that Usagi was no better than Mamoru
had been.
"Uhmm.. class... Why don't you take out your..." Usagi paused. "Let's
draw pictures! There's white paper and crayons on the side. One person
from each table slowly get enough paper for each person at your table and
one basket of crayons, okay?"
Usagi sank into her chair, the envelope still in her hands, as her class
began to obey her. She watched as one student from each table went to the
side of the room, collected the necessary items and returned to their seats.
Once everyone was working quietly, Usagi drew her attention back to the
dreaded envelope. The outside gave no clue to it's contents, although he
still used the name 'Usako' rather than 'Usagi'.
Slowly, Usagi slipped one finger into the envelope and began tearing it open.
Just as she was about to pull the letter out, a small hand tugged on her
skirt. Usagi looked up to see Yuki standing beside her chair.
"Tsukino-sensei, are you okay?" She asked, feeling more comfortable
confronting Usagi than Mamoru. After all, Usagi didn't get mad at her even
when she had cut open her teacher's leg with the skate.
"I'm fine, Yuki-chan." Usagi's voice betrayed her, but she gave a weak smile,
hoping to convince the child.
"You look as bad as Mamo-chan did this morning." Yuki giggled. "He was
afraid to come in and see you."
The though of her big, brave Mamo-chan being afraid of her little teacher
set Yuki into a fit of giggles. Usagi smiled at the little girl.
"You should get back to work." Usagi gave Yuki a gentle push towards her
desk before pulling the smooth paper out of the envelope. Taking a deep
breath, Usagi read the letter.
Usako,
Can you meet me for lunch today? We need to talk.
I'll be waiting outside for you.
Mamoru
The letter fell from Usagi's hands as she finished reading it. They needed
to talk? About what? Whenever couples needed to talk...
'But since when were you a couple?' Usagi asked herself.
"Tsukino-sensei. We're done colouring! What now?" The voices of her
children brought Usagi out of her thought. She glanced at the clock and was
shocked to see they had spent over an hour sitting quietly.
"Uhmm... Free time!" Usagi told them. Cheers went up as the children got up
from their tables and went to their favourite activities. Yuki remained
seated, watching her teacher carefully.
"Tsukino-sensei?" She asked, once more standing next to Usagi's chair. "Why
are you so upset?"
"It's nothing Yuki-chan. Why don't you go play?" She smiled at the girl, but
neither her voice nor her smile had their usual warmth. Yuki nodded and
stepped away, still worried about her teacher.
~~
When lunch rolled around, Usagi waited to see all the students off, not eager
to know if Mamoru really was waiting for her. Unazuki came in and picked
up Yuki.
"I hear you and Mamoru really hit it off." She winked at Usagi.
"Who did you hear this from?" Usagi asked, still very pale.
"Well, actually..." Unazuki blushed. "I kinda peeked to see if you and
Mamoru were finished doing whatever when I brought Yuki back..."
Usagi's eyes widened.
"Does Yuki...?"
"No! I made her wait in the kitchen. I'm sorry I did... I just didn't want
to leave her there it..." Unazuki's voice trailed off.
"Yeah. I think everything's over though." Usagi sighed.
"What's wrong?" Unazuki asked, looking worriedly at Usagi. Usagi didn't
reply. She just handed her the note.
"The bastard!" Unazuki exclaimed as she finished reading the note. "I'm
going to go out there and give him a piece of me..."
"No! Unazuki-chan... I don't know what he's going to say, but whatever it
is, it will be in everyone's best interest." Usagi sighed again. "Especially
Yuki's."
"Are you sure? Call me after, okay?" Unazuki wrote a number out and handed
it to Usagi.
"Alright. Bye Yuki-chan." Usagi waved half-heartedly at Yuki, who had been
standing near the door the whole time.
"Bye Tsukino-sensei."
Unazuki led Yuki out of the room and Usagi took a deep breath before making
her way out to the parking lot.
She glanced around and saw Mamoru's car was parked next to hers. Mamoru
was leaning up against it, with a dozen roses in his hand. As Usagi
approached him, he stepped towards her. Before she could utter a word,
Mamoru scooped her up in his arms and kissed her.
Usagi was astounded. She thought Mamoru was going to tell her that it
(whatever it had been) was over, and here he was kissing her?
"What's going on?" Usagi asked, pulling away from him. She saw hurt flash
in Mamoru's eyes, but she was to shaken and confused to care.
"I wanted to see you... Wanted to have lunch with you..." Mamoru told her.
"But I was afraid."
"Afraid?" Usagi asked. Mamoru nodded.
"It's easy to be swept away on a wave of passion, when the five year old
isn't around." Mamoru began fiddling with the flowers. "I thought, maybe,
you would realize the implications of being with me... Of loving me. It's
not just Chiba Mamoru you get, but Furuata Yuki as well." Mamoru glanced
nervously up at her. "I don't want to lose you."
Usagi was shocked. *He* was afraid of losing *her*? All this time she
was thinking that he didn't love her, didn't want her? Usagi burst out
laughing.
"Mamo-chan!" She threw herself into his arms, and hugged him tightly. "How
can you be so silly?" She whispered in his ear.
Mamoru laughed, and held her tightly against him.
"I was so worried..." He told her.
"So was I. I thought you were going to tell me that you don't want to see
me anymore." She told him.
"Now whose being silly?" Mamoru asked her. "Yuki adores you, and your good
to her. That would have been enough to for me to start a relationship with
you, but somewhere along the line, I fell in love with you, and that's enough
for me to want to marry you!"
The couple kissed under the blazing afternoon sun, the bouquet of roses
lying, long since forgotten, on the ground next to them. A gentle breeze
captured the rose petals, freeing them from the stem and letting them
dance around the happy pair.
"Oh Mamo-chan..." Usagi sighed happily, leaning her head on his muscular
chest. Mamoru held her tightly, his face buried in the top of her hair.
Neither of them were aware of the two pairs of eyes watching them from
around the corner.
"It worked..." Yuki whispered. Now her Mamo-chan could be happy.
Unazuki smiled at the little girl.
"What worked, Yuki-chan?"
Yuki looked up, her expression like that of a cat caught with its paw in
a fish bowl.
"Nothing..."

A year later, Usagi sat in the kitchen chair, admiring their house. She and
Mamoru had gotten married shortly after the little incident in the school
parking lot. The Furuhata family gave their blessings, as did her friends
and family. Although, Usagi's mother did talk to her about the grave
responsibility raising a five year old was. Usagi had just laughed, saying
Mamoru was an expert on these things. She would just be following his lead.
Usagi's friends had been shocked when they learned Usagi was not only dating,
but engaged to boot. They had been thrilled for her.
'They'll be even more thrilled now.' Usagi though, her hand resting on her
stomach. She glanced up at Mamoru, who was standing behind her.
Yuki was seated in the chair in front of Usagi and was looking expectanly
from Mamoru to Usagi.
"Well? What is it?" She asked impatiently. Usagi laughed.
"Yuki-chan, how would you feel if you had a little brother or sister?" Usagi
asked. Yuki's eyes widened.
"You mean your...?" She asked. Usagi nodded. Yuki shouted in happiness,
before hugging Usagi.
"Ooh! I gotta go tell Hazumi-chan!!" Yuki raced out of the kitchen, leaving
Usagi and Mamoru alone. (A bad idea, maybe, considering what happened last
time....)
Usagi stood up and faced Mamoru.
"I think she took it rather well." Usagi was smiling.
"I love the way you said that." Mamoru murmured, gently kissing Usagi's lips.
"What do you mean?" Usagi asked, her arms going around his neck.
"Yuki's younger brother or sister..." Mamoru replied, before his kissed
her again. Usagi smiled against Mamoru's lips.
"What did you expect me to say?" Usagi asked, before Mamoru swept her up into
his arms.
"I don't think I ever properly carried you across the thresh hold." Mamoru
told her, still laying butterfly kisses on her neck and face.
"Mmm... I think you did quite a few times, actually, but once more certainly
can't hurt..."
