Serena walked through the school hallway as calmly as she could. She
could hear the snide remarks being made about her and the whispered
rumors. It was all she could do not to break down and cry, but that
would be worse. She went into the lunch room and sat down with her friends.
"Hey Serena. How are you holding up?" Lita asked quietly.
"I can't take this much more." She whispered back. "I'm gonna lose it!"
"No you are not. Now listen to me Serena! You are not going to let
these... these... scoundrels see you cry." Amy told her a take charge way.
Serena looked at her friend shocked, then smiled.
"Uh-oh Serena. He's headed this way." Lita warned, just in time. Serena
slammed down her icy barrier just as she heard his voice.
"Serena!" He exclaimed, sitting next to her and draping his arm across her
shoulders. Serena shrugged his arm off.
"Mitchell." she greeted coldly.
"Well, if it isn't the Ice Queen returned. You were pretty warm last
night though..." Mitch laughed, and Serena didn't reply. "Well, I'll
leave you to your little friends."
Mitch stood up and walked away.
"He's gone." Amy told her. Serena sighed and allowed herself to relax.
"I don't know how much more of this I can take." She told them. "He's such
a filthy liar!"
"I know, Serena. I know..." Lita told her, knowing there was nothing they
could say or do to comfort their friend.
~~
Serena sat in the booth at the Game Center crying. Tears poured down
her face and there was nothing she could do to stop them. She buried
her face in her arms and let the sobs rack her body. She was sick and
tired of Mitch and his ego.
"Serena? Is something wrong?" A voice asked her. Serena's head shot up
and she found herself face to face with Darien.
"Just leave me alone!" She sobbed. "I've had enough torture today!"
Darien was shocked, to say the least. He had noticed a change in Serena
over the past two weeks, but had no clue what was causing it. He was
seriously worried about her.
"Serena what happened?" Darien asked.
"Nothing. Just go away." Serena's voice was muffled because she had
placed her head back in her arms, on the table.
"Serena..." Darien reached out and gently touched her shoulder. Serena's
head bolted up and she moved away from his hand.
"Leave me alone!" She cried.
Darien was startled at the fear in her eyes.
"Serena!" He exclaimed. "What happened? Who did this to you?"
Serena was surprised at the ferocity in his voice. Something about
the way he looked at her... almost protective... made her trust him.
"There's a boy..." She sighed. "He's been spreading rumors about... us,
only there is no us. He asked me out but I told him no, and ever since
he's been saying.. things. He implies that we are... But we're not!
I would never!"
As it slowly began to sink in on Darien, his anger built. How dare
this boy lie about Serena, *his* Serena and think he would get away
with it. Slowly a plan began to form in Darien's mind.
"Do you want to something about it?" Darien asked her.
"What?" She asked, incredulous.
"Do you want to something, to put it to a stop?" He asked her again.
"Yes! Of course! The past two months have been torture!" She exclaimed.
"Alright, here's what we're gonna do..." Darien leaned closer and began
whispering at a furious rate. Slowly, a smile broke out on Serena's face
as she nodded her head at Darien's plan.
~~
The next day at lunch, Serena sauntered into the cafeteria to meet Amy and
Lita. She ignored the looks and comments she received as she plunked into
her seat.
"Hey guys!" There was a sparkle in her deep blue eyes. Lita and Amy
exchanged glances.
"Hi Sere. Are you okay?" Lita asked cautiously.
"Yes." Serena giggled. "I've got a plan now and..."
"He's coming again." Amy cut in. Serena continued to smile as she pulled
out her lunch bag waiting for Mitch.
"Hey baby.?" Mitch dropped an arm around her shoulder. Serena looked
up at him, not with an icy glare, but a fiery one. Mitch was taken
aback.
"You realize my boyfriend really doesn't like it when you treat me like
this?" She asked, one eyebrow delicately arched.
"Boyfriend?" Mitch asked with a bark of laughter. "You don't have a
boyfriend."
"But I do." Serena replied. "He's coming after school today, and he's
furious. If I were you, I'd make myself scare."
"Yeah right." Mitch laughed again, but Serena could tell he was
nervous. "I'll see you baby."
He stood up and walked away. Serena turned her attention back to
her friends who were staring at her.
"Boyfriend?" Lita asked.
"Yeah." Serena smiled. "Darien."
~~
After school, quite a gathering of students waited outside. After what
had happened in the cafeteria, few wanted to miss the action. Serena
walked calmly out of the school with Lita and Amy, while Mitch waited
at the curb.
"Where is he?" Lita hissed as they walked down the steps of the school.
"He'll be here." Serena reassured her friend.
"Are you positive?" Amy asked. Serena nodded again. As if on cue,
a red sports car pulled up in front of the school and Serena was off
like a shot.
By the time she reached the car, Darien had gotten out and was
waiting for her with open arms.
"Darling." He murmured into her hair.
"Darien..." Serena looked up at him and his lips met hers in a steamy
kiss. Cheers rose from the crowd, but Mitch silenced them with a wave
of his hand.
"What the hell do you think your doing with my girl?" Mitch asked,
stepping closer to Darien and Serena, who were still locked in a
heated embrace.
"Your girl?" Darien asked, having pulled away, though reluctantly, from
Serena.
"Yeah." Mitch tried to act tough, but he was scared. Darien was a rather
formidable person, especially when he was angry.
"I don't think so. Serena and I have been dating for quite some time...
I take it your that loser who thinks he's good enough for her." Darien
glanced at Mitch. "Your not. Come on, Sere, let's get going."
"I don't think so." Mitch grabbed Darien's shoulder and punched him,
except that Darien's face wasn't where it had been a moment ago.
"Do you really want to fight me?" Darien asked, his tone slightly amused.
Mitch didn't answer, he just took another swing. Darien caught his fist
mid flight. Mitch looked at Darien in shock.
"Like I said, do you really want to fight me?" Darien repeated. Mitch
tore his fist away and turned to Serena.
"Your just a stupid whore anyway."
Serena's eyes welled up with tears as Mitch turned to leave.
"What did you call her?" Darien asked, his tone deadly soft. Mitch
glanced over his shoulder.
"She's slut. I'm sure you know that as well as I do." The smirk
on his face is what drove Darien over the edge. He closed the space
between himself and Mitch in two paces. Darien grabbed the front of
his shirt, lifting him clean off the ground.
"Don't you dare talk about her like that. Do you understand?" Mitch
nodded, frigtened. "Good."
"Darien, lets just go." Serena placed a soft hand on Darien's arm. She
could feel his muscles through his shirt. "He's not worth it."
And finally Serena fully understood herself. He really wasn't worth
the trouble he had caused her. He wasn't worth the wasted tears she
had cried over him night after night. He wasn't worth another thought.
"Alright Serena." Darien said softly. He dropped Mitch and turned, putting
one arm around Serena and guiding her to the car.
Once inside, Serena gazed out the window, deep in thought. Darien glanced
at her occasionally as he drove.
"What are you thinking about?" He asked her.
"I don't expect there to be anymore trouble at school... I don't have
to worry about that anymore, thanks to you." She smiled at him.
"It was nothing, Sere." He smiled and turned his attention back to
the road.
'That's what I was afraid of...' Serena thought sadly. 'When he kissed me,
it felt so... So right, so amazing, so perfect...'
Unconsciously she sighed and leaned her head against the glass of the
window.
"What's wrong?" Darien asked, his voice showing his concern.
"Nothing." Serena replied, then hesistated. "It's just that..."
"Yes?" Darien asked, glancing at her again.
"I... I really like you, Darien. I never really realized it until you
came to my rescue, playing the knight in shining armor. I mean, I never
would have thought that you, of all people, would come up with a plan
to help me out. Then, when you were kissing me... It was so..." She
stopped, thinking about how to put what she had felt into words.
"So wonderfully right?" Darien suggested. Serena looked at him, her
eyes wide with shock, before slowly nodding.
"I know exactly what you mean." Darien told her, pulling his car over
to the side of the road. He turned to face Serena fully, took her face
into his hands and kissed her again.
Serena was stunned. Darien knew. Darien understood. Did that mean
Darien...
"I love you, Serena." Darien whispered to her. "I have since the
moment I saw you. I knew you were so perfect, and wonderful..."
Slowly Serena shook off the shock of what was happening. She looked
Darien straight in the eye, trying to figure out of he was teasing her.
The look she saw there completely convinced her that he was serious.
"Darien, I love you too."
"Serena... If you'll let me... I'll protect you from everything forever...
I'll love you forever, take care of you..." Darien murmured against her
hair as he held her tightly. "I love you so much..."
"Oh Darien... You're my knight in shining armor..."
