"Your late, Serena." David told her as she slid into a booth at Crown
Game Center.
"I'm sorry. I was kinda busy." Serena smiled, and tried to brush off David's
harsh attitude.
"How is everything going?" He asked, cutting right to the chase.
"Gee David, and how have you been too?" Serena asked, shocked
at his blunt directness.
"Its dangerous for us to be seen together Serena. We don't have time
for polite formalities."
"Polite formalities? David, we're supposed to be engaged!" Serena
exclaimed. David sighed.
"Is it working?" He asked in an exasperated tone.
"Yes David." She replied, fighting back the tears that were threatening
to spill.
"Good. I'll meet you here, same time same place next week." Without
another world, David stood up and walked out.
Serena buried her head in her arms on the tabletop. Tears streamed down
her face and were absorbed into the thick material of her sweatshirt.
'David... What happened to you? You used to be so sweet...' Serena
couldn't help but sob. She had promised herself to a man who was like that?
How could she go through with it?
"Can I get you anything?" A voice asked and Serena lifted her head.
"No thank you..." She sniffled. "I'll just go..."
"That's okay, miss. You can stay here, and if you need anything, just
ask, okay?" The young man smiled sympathetically before handing her a
few tissues.
"Thanks..." Serena accepted the tissues and went back to her moping.
Two hours later found Serena sitting in her apartment trying to sort
through everything that had happened.
"David turned into a real jerk, over night and Darien became the
perfect gentleman. And Darien fell in love with me..." Serena sighed remembering
the previous night, and how Darien had held her close and kissed. He had said
he loved her, that she had captured his heart, and Serena had felt elated, but why?
"It's not like I care about Darien Shields or anything, right?" But even
as she said it, she knew it wasn't true. "So I do care, at least a little bit... What
about David?" She asked herself. Serena pulled out the box that contained her
engagement ring. "What am I going to do?"
The door bell tang, startling Serena and causing her to drop the box. She
leapt to her feet and opened the door to find Molly standing there.
"Hey! I was surprised not to see you down in the lobby." Molly smiled.
"Huh?" Serena stared at Molly, puzzled.
"We have a class now, Serena. You asked me to drive you..." Molly laughed.
"Don't tell me you forgot!"
"Forgot? Of course not..." Serena laughed nervously. "Just let me grab my
books, k?"
"Sure thing. I'll go get my car." Molly turned towards the elevator and Serena
dashed through her apartment gathering her books.
"Thanks for the lift Molly." Serena smiled at her friend as the two left the
class later that night.
"Sure thing Serena. Are you okay? You seemed kinda out of it." Molly asked,
concerned about her friend.
"I'm fine, Mol. Things are just kinda happening." Serena shrugged.
"Let me know if you want to talk." Molly pushed the door of the school open and
the two turned towards the parking lot. As they started toward Molly's car, Serena froze.
A midnight black Mercedes was parked in front of the school, and the tall driver was
leaning against the driver's side door.
"Need a lift?" He asked, gazing at Serena through dark glasses.
"Darien..." She breathed.
"Do you know him?" Molly asked quietly. Serena nodded.
"I don't need a ride home Mol. I'll call you tomorrow." Serena whispered
back before dashing down the stairs towards Darien.
He caught her as she threw herself in his arms, his lips capturing her's as easily.
Serena wrapped her arms around his neck and help him close, her books completely
forgotten as they lay scattered on the floor.
"I missed you..." Darien murmured against her hair.
"Oh Darien..." She sighed as she snuggled against him. The cool night
air gently surrounded the pair, blowing Serena's hair softly.
Slowly Darien pushed Serena away from him and gazed down at her.
Brushing her hair away from her face, Darien spoke.
"Maybe I should be getting you home." He whispered, still caressing her
cheek.
"I guess..." Serena replied, her eyes shut as she leaned against his hand.
"Gods, Serena, I love you..." Darien whispered. Serena's eyes flew open
and she pulled away, staring at Darien in shock.
Serena woke up in a bed far softer than her own. Mumbling in her still
half asleep state, Serena stretched, rolled over and pulled the silky sheets with
her. She felt a gentle hand brushing the hair away from her face and smiled before
drifting deeper into sleep.
Sometime later, Serena awoke again to the smell of fresh coffee. She sat
up, tossing the blankets aside and stretched.
"Hmm... Smells good." Serena stood up and padded across the soft carpet
to the door that was left ajar. She peered out of the darkly coloured bedroom and
saw Darien, dressed in a pair of sweatpants, standing in the kitchen drinking a cup
of coffee. She smiled softly at him, watching him. He moved out of the kitchen, and
into the living room. He stood in front of the tall window and gazed out on the slowly
waking street.
"Am I keeping you from somewhere?" Serena asked, sleepily rubbing
her eyes. Darien whipped around, his coffee sloshing against the edge of his
cup.
"Serena..." He set the cup down and had crossed the room to her in
three steps. Engulfing her in his embrace, Darien held Serena tightly.
'This is something I can definitely get used to waking up to every
morning.' Serena thought with a smile. She returned Darien's hug, wrapping
her small arms around him and burying her face in his broad chest.
The pair stood like that for some time, just existing with each
other. Darien sighed happily and buried his face in her soft hair.
"This is wonderful…" He whispered. "So perfect… Beautiful Serena…."
Serena could feel her face burning at Darien's words. A delicate
red stained her cheeks, and she kept her face hidden from his view.
'He's right…' She thought. 'It is perfect and wonderful… God
I love this man…' Serena froze at her own thought, shocked that she
had even dared to think it. 'Darien? Wonderful? What about David?!'
The thoughts of her last meeting with David came, unbidden, to her mind.
David's harsh words and cold face were embedded in her mind's eye,
and she knew than and there that she no longer loved David.
The realization hit Serena hard. She was no longer in love with
her fiancé, but with a man she barely knew.
'A man who's also in love with you…' A soft voice whispered.
Serena smiled.
Author's Notes: I'm sorry it took so long! I'm sure that everyone knows me
