"Serena!" A voice called, as Serena shut her locker. She looked up the
hallway and smiled as Aurora waved.
"You left so quickly after bio that I didn’t get a chance to talk to
you!" Aurora scolded.
"Sorry about that. I just had to get away from Dreadful Darien. I
knew you’d catch up with me though." Serena replied, smiling, as the
two made their way towards the cafeteria. "So tell meabout this party
you’re so hyped about. Did Darien’s Daddy buy him a new toy?"
"Don’t be so mean!" Aurora chided. "It’ll be a lot of fun, Sere.
Everyone is going, and we were both invited."
Serena sat down at an empty table, and Aurora sat next to her. Serena
put her bag on the table and looked at Aurora thoughtfully.
"Who invited us?" Serena asked.
"Darien himself." Aurora tucked her long golden red hair behind her
ear. "He asked me this morning in math class."
"What makes you, or him, think I would want to go." Serena asked.
"It’s a party Sere! It’s the end of the year and you can come because
you don’t have any work to do. Calista and Greg are even going."
"You really want to go?" Serena looked at her friend doubtfully.
"Yeah! It’ll be so much fun! Will you come Sere? Please?" Aurora
pleaded. "I can’t go alone!"
"Alright Aurora. I’ll go with you." Serena sighed as Aurora clapped
her hands gleefully.
"We’ll go shopping tonight to get new outfits! Are you busy?" Aurora
looked at her friend hopefully.
"No. I’m free tonight." Serena said as she began to eat her lunch.
"Aurora, why are you so intent on going to Darien’s party? Do you
have a crush on one of Darien’s friends?"
Serena looked at her friend slyly, with one eyebrow raised.
"Oh! well... You know Darien and I go way back. We’ve been friends
forever. Our parents are close and all..." Aurora giggled nervously,
before reaching over and taking Serena’s apple. Before she could
finish answering, two people sat down at their table.
"Hi Serena." Darien said, as he smiled at her. He noticed that her
hair was still up. "Hi Aurora."
"Hello." Serena replied, her voice calm.
"You know, I think I like it when you put her hair up like that." He
told her. Serena raised her golden eyebrow delicately, before reaching up
to undo her hair. The golden silk tumbled down her back. Aurora looked
at her friend as though she had gone nuts. Before Darien could say anything,
Aurora spoke quickly.
"Hey Darien! Hi Kevin." Aurora said, smiling brightly at the two.
"What’s up?"
"I was just wondering if you two would be coming to my party Friday night?"
Darien asked, gazing at Serena.
"Maybe." She said as her clear blue eyes met his gaze.
"Of course I’ll be there!" Aurora said, before smiling maliciously at
her friend. "I’ll make sure Serena’s there too."
"Did you get the math homework we were supposed to do, Aurora?"
Kevin asked as he smiled shyly at her.
"Yeah! Oh wait.. no..." Aurora blushed slightly, brushing her golden red
hair out of her face. "Serena was supposed to get it for me..."
"And I did." Serena replied, pulling a piece of paper with some page
and question numbers written on it out of her bag. "Here you go."
Aurora gratefully took the paper and quickly copied the work down into
her notebook, before handing the paper to Kevin.
"Thanks." Kevin said, taking the sheet and folding it up. He put it in
his pocket, before looking at Aurora again.
"Aurora, do you have a date for the party?" He asked, his voice coming
out in one big rush. Serena had to bite her lip to keep from laughing.
"Not yet." Aurora replied as she reached her hand over to pinch Serena,
under the table of course. This caused the laughter problem to
disappear immediately. Serena’s blue eyes went wide with surprise before
taking on a mischievous gleam.
"But Aurora! You promised we would go together!" Serena exclaimed,
calling her excellent acting skills into play. She turned to her best
friend with her big eyes full of tears. Darien watched the scene unfold,
barely keeping his laughter under control. Aurora turned to Serena looking
thoroughly shocked.
‘God! She’s so cute when she does that!’ Darien thought.
"You promised Aurora! I don’t wanna go by myself!" Serena’s voice
rose a view decibels, and her lips pouted delicately.
"Oh poor Serena!" Darien exclaimed, deciding to help his friend out.
"I can’t let you go by yourself! I’ll just have to take you myself."
‘Eekk!’ Serena thought. She did not like this turn of events, but she
didn’t want to make it obvious. Quickly, she began racking her brain
for an excuse, any excuse!, as to why she couldn’t go with Darien.
"There you go Serena! Now I don’t need to go with you." Aurora, on
the other hand, was liking how this was turning out, very much. Poor
Serena was right!
‘Serves ya right, Sere!’ Aurora though.
"But it’s Darien’s party! He can’t take me, he has to host it." Serena
said, almost jumping up with the excitement of having found an excuse. A
plausible excuse at that.
"That’s okay, Serena. I can pick you up before the party starts and we
can even co-host it." Darien suggested. He liked the look of terror that
had crept into Serena’s eyes. He knew she wouldn’t like the idea at all.
"It sounds like everything’s all figured out. I’ll pick you up around
7:00, okay Aurora?" Kevin asked. Aurora nodded, as she smiled at him.
"Serena, you can just come over right after school, if you want. You
can help me set up and everything!" Darien laughed at Serena’s stricken
expression.
"Sure..." She said, sighing in defeat. Aurora laughed. This was turning
out better than she had hoped.
"Well, alas, we must depart." Darien said as he stood up. "I’ll see
you two later!"
"Bye Aurora, Serena." Kevin said as he and Darien walked out of the
cafeteria. Serena turned to Aurora, her eyes a darker blue than normal.
"What just happened?" Serena asked, her voice full of panic. "How did
I manage to get myself into this situation? More importantly, how am I
going to get myself out?"
"Oh Sere! Serves you right." Aurora replied. "Just go with him. It
can’t be that bad..."
"Oh yeah? Famous last words..."
