Usagi sat lacing up her ballet slippers, listening to the other students chatter.
“So, Mary, what did you and Tom do last night?” Cindy asked.
“Well, he took me out for an expensive dinner, and for a carriage ride around the city.
When he dropped me off at my house, I broke up with him.” She told the others.
They gasped.
“Why?” Rachel asked. “He was so sweet.”
“ I know, but I met this really hot friend of his. I’d rather date Tom’s friend.” She explained.
“Well Rick and I are still dating.” Gloria announced.
“Really?” Cindy asked. “How can you stay with one guy for so long?”
Usagi smiled gently.
“I love him.” Gloria answered simply.
Usagi understood completely. She loved one guy, always.
“Ah! Hurry everyone! We’re going to be late.” Cindy cried.
The girls all rushed out, except Rachel, who paused at the door.
“Serenity?” she said quietly, using Usagi’s stage name as a sign of respect.
“Yes?”
“Uhmm… I was wondering if you could help me.”
“With what?” Usagi asked.
“Well, you see, Cindy said that you came from Japan and I have a cousin visiting from there. I
don’t speak a lot of Japanese so I thought maybe if you did…”
Usagi couldn’t help but notice how nervous Rachel sounded.
“You want me to translate for you?” Usagi asked.
“If you wouldn’t mind. My mom speaks Japanese but I have to get him from the airport after dance
tomorrow. Are you busy?”
“No, I can go with you. I thought your car was in the shop though, Rachel?” Usagi noticed the
slightly surprised look on her face.
“It is. I was going to borrow Cindy’s.” Rachel explained.
“We can just take one of mine.” Usagi offered. “Hurry though, or we will be late for class.”
Usagi and Rachel hurried out of the dressing room and joined the others at the barr. Rachel
and Usagi didn’t exchange another word during or after class. Usagi was used to it though..
She didn’t talk with the other dancers much, or with her classmates. She attended the school
next to the dance studio as most of the dancers did. Rachel was in most of Usagi’s classes and
admired her thoroughly. She knew Usagi lived in an apartment near the studio. She had often
seen Usagi walking home, alone.
After class, Usagi changed quickly and left. She had a science test and couldn’t be late. She
wasn’t. After the test, which she found easy, Usagi went home.
Sighing, she entered her apartment only to be greeted by silence.
“I have to get a cat.” She decided. Usagi dropped her bag on a chair and went into her kitchen
without checking her answering machine. Why bother? There wouldn’t be any messages. There never
were.
Usagi opened her fridge, looking for some food. Not really feeling like eating, Usagi shut it
and sat down in front of the TV. She fell asleep before turning it on.
“Sailor Moon! Save us!”
Usagi woke with a gasp. She breathed slowly looking around her apartment.
“I did save you.” She replied to the voice, but no one was there. No one heard. She glanced at
her watch. It was 9:45, She flicked on her TV as she went into her kitchen. She pulled out some
vegetables and began chopping. She grabbed her wok and made a quick stir fry. She sat at her
kitchen table and picked at her dinner. She hated the silence of her apartment. Everyday when
she walked through the door it was the same. She set her fork down and went to bed.
The next day, Usagi quietly entered the dressing room.
“Hi Serenity!” Rachel greeted. Usagi smiled.
“Hi.”
“I just wanted to tell you that my mom got time off work so I don’t have to pick my cousin up.
It turned out his flight was earlier than w thought. My mom is bringing him here though, so you
can still meet him.”
“Thank you Rachel.” Usagi was earlier than usual, but she still changed quickly, putting in her
white ballet uniform. She stood staring out the window listening to the other girls chatter,
when she heard a small voice.
<<“Mama?”>> the others were quiet and she turned around. She saw Chibi Usa standing in the
doorway surveying the room. Their eyes locked.
<<“Chibi Usa!”>> Usagi cried.
Chibi Usa came flying across the dressing room and into Usagi’s arms.
<<”Darling, how are you? Is something wrong?”>> Speaking more quietly. <<”In the future?”>>
Usagi asked.
<<“Nope. Mommy and Daddy,”>> Chibi Usa giggled. <<”Thought it would be nice if I came for a
visit.”>>
Usagi was glad to see the little girl but wondered how she had gotten there, and was afraid of
the answer.
<<“Chibi Usa-chan, how did you get here?”>> Before the child had time to answer, she heard a
familiar voice.
<<”Chibi Usa-chan?”>> Mamoru opened the door and walked in. Rachel’s mother was right behind
him. Chibi Usa jumped from the bench she and Usagi had been sitting on and ran to Mamoru.
<<”Daddy!”>> She cried.
<<”Chibi Usa-chan! Don’t run off again, or I won’t ever bring you on a trip again!”>> he
threatened.
“Rachel, this is your cousin Chiba Mamoru, and his daughter Chibi Usa.” Rachel’s mother,
Constance, explained.
“Hello.” Rachel greeted. Usagi took a deep breath. She stood with her back to Mamoru.
“Wow Rach! You never said your cousin was so cute!” Mary exclaimed.
“I didn’t exactly know…”
<<”Mamoru-san.”>> Usagi greeted, turning around to face him. <<”Usako!”>> He gasped. Chibi Usa
giggled.
<<”I told you I would find Mommy.”>> She said.
<<”Yes, you did.”>>
<<”Well, I’d better get to class, or I’ll be late. Chibi Usa-chan, would you like to come
watch?”>> Usagi asked.
<<”Yes!”>> she agreed happily.
<<”Alright then. Let’s go.”>> Usagi picked the little girl up. Together, Rachel, Constance,
Usagi, Chibi Usa and Mamoru walked to the studio.
“Well, we weren’t expecting the child. I didn’t even know he had one. We have no room… <>”
Constance asked.
“I am.” Usagi answered. Rachel gasped.
“How do you know Mamoru-san?” she asked.
“It’s a long story.” Usagi replied. “ I know you have a lot of questions you want to ask, but
please don’t, not yet, not here. <>” Usagi said.
<<“Do you want to?”>> Constance asked the child.
<<”I want to stay with Mommy and Daddy.”>>
<<”Well, Mamoru-san, do you want to stay with me to keep Chibi Usa happy?”>> Usagi asked.
<<”Yes, for Chibi Usa’s happiness.”>> He said. Usagi nodded and set Chibi Usa down. She
hugged her daughter.
<<“Mommy, dance like Serenity!”>>
<<”Alright darling. You have to behave though.” Usagi turned and took her position. As the
music began and she danced, Mamoru could only think ‘Wow!’
Later they all went to Rachel’s house for dinner. Everyone quietly looked from Usagi to Mamoru
and back again. Finally Usagi put her fork down.
“Alright, ask what ever you want to ask.” She looked expectantly from Constance, to Rachel’s
father Patrick, to Rachel.
“How long have you two known each other?” Rachel asked shyly.
“Forever.” Usagi replied.
“What do you mean?”
“I guess that means I have to explain everything from the beginning.” Usagi sighed. “It’s a
very long story.” She told them the tale of Princess Serenity and Prince Endymion.
“That’s a beautiful legend, but what does it have to do with you?” Constance asked.
“We are Princess Serenity and Prince Endymion.” Mamoru replied.
“Mamoru-san, are you feeling ok?” Patrick asked.
“Yes, I’m fine. We are the reincarnated versions. The same souls.”
“In this lifetime, I wield the silver crystal.” Usagi said. She held out her hand and
concentrated. The golden crescent moon appeared brightly on her forehead and the crystal in
her hand.
“Yeah Mommy!” Chibi Usa cried.
“I still don’t believe it.” Patrick stated.
<<“Mamoru-san, maybe it would be easier to make them forget.”>> Usagi suggested.
<<“Yeah, but only Sailor Pluto and Luna can do that.”>>
<<“Not true. I can. With the crystal. I made all of us forget after Beryl… I could make you
forget I ever existed.”>>
<<“No! Never! God Usako! I love you!”>>
<<”It doesn’t matter, Mamoru. Not anymore. I’ve defeated every enemy to come my way. I’ve
ensured the safety of the future. Isn’t that enough? Can’t I be normal now? Without this
ancient romance? Without this cursed power?”>> Usagi was yelling at him. She stood up.
<<”Excuse me, please. I can’t stay here anymore. After everything you’ve done to me Mamoru,
why can’t you leave me alone now? Why did you have to come here?”>> She turned and walked out
of the room. As she was about to leave the house, Chibi Usa screamed her name.
<<“Neo-Queen Serenity!”>> Chibi Usa yelled with such force her own crescent moon began to
glow. Usagi stopped. She turned, and as she did, her clothes changed. Her black skirt and
dark blue blouse became the ancient dress of the Moon Queen.
<<“Yes, Small Lady Serenity?”>> She spoke quietly.
<<“Don’t leave. Don’t walk away because you are afraid. You saved me a million times as
Sailor Moon. You risked yourself for Daddy before. You would have died because you love
him so much. You died in the past because you loved him too much to exist without him.”>> Chibi
Usa was standing in front of her mother, wearing a matching gown. <<“You always let your
emotions rule you before. You always tell me not to be afraid of how I feel. To let emotion
rule me. To never be like your Mamo-chan was. Never to hold them on such a tight reign that
you don’t realize how much you love someone and how much they love you. You said you wouldn’t
care if the world ended just as long as you could be with him.”>>
<< “That is true, Small Lady. I did say that. When I was younger. Before I learned how much
someone you love can and will hurt you. Before I found out that not everyone will eagerly
accept you. Before I had to ban people to a distant moon so they did not threaten me, only
to have them come back and try to kill you, try to kill me than die saving me because they love
me. When I was younger all those things were true.”>>
<<“In the future you are not younger and that is when you told me all those things.”>>
<<”The future is not the same anymore, Small Lady. Possibly I do not rule in the future.
Possibly I am dead. Possibly…”>>
<<”Stop it! Serenity Stop it! Damn you!”>> Mamoru cried as he stood up. His suit suddenly
became a lavender tuxedo. Rachel, Constance and Patrick just watched them, completely shocked.
<<”Do you have any idea what you are saying? Who you are saying it too? Chibi Usa is still
here, now, which means she exists in the future. You are her mother and I am her father so
we have to be together for her to exist. Why did you leave Tokyo? Why did you leave the
senshi? Your family? Me?”>>
<<”To be a normal girl again. To live a normal life without putting my life at risk every
night. So I didn’t know that the world would be frozen and I would have to save it and rule
it before I turned twenty. So I could escape the constant pressure of being a good Moon
Princess who would make a good Queen and carry on her mother’s legacy.”>> Usagi was weeping.
Not the usual Usagi wails, but heart wrenching tears. She fell to her knees.
<<”I can’t live with that anymore. Not anymore… It’s too hard.”>>
Mamoru moved to her and knelt beside her. He gathered her into her arms and held her.
<<”Mamo-chan.. I don’t want to do this anymore. I can’t. It hurts too much. I just want to go
home. To be with you and the senshi and Luna and Artemis and Shingo and Mama and Daddy and..
and….” Her voice was lost in her tears. Mamoru held her tighter.
<<“Usako, I love you. Whatever you want I will do, by the power of the Earth, I will make you
happy again.”>>
Usagi just held on to him tightly. Slowly they stood up, still clinging to each other as though
if they let go, the world would end. Chibi Usa smiled, seeing that her work was done and used
the time key to go home. Usagi held out the crystal and Mamoru touched it. When the flash died
down, they were gone and Rachel, Constance and Patrick weren’t sure why they were looking at
the front door.
