Love and Jealousy: An Unforgotten Legend
By: Eternal Angel and Jade

        I used to think,
When I looked into your eyes,
        That I saw love,
Where there used to be nothing.

        I used to think,
        When you laughed at me,
        That it was teasing,
It could never be hate I saw.

        I used to think,
        The fights we had,
        Were heated arguments,
        Not tearful matches.

        I used to think,
        That you cared about me,
        That we'd be together always,
        And you'd never betray me.

        I used to think,
        I could live with anything,
So long as you were there,
        To guide me through.

But then, I used to think,
        That I could change you,
        But I can't,
Because you've left me all alone now.

And I can tell there was never any love in your eyes,
That you always laughed at me,
That the fights were real and hurtful,
That you never cared for me.

That I can with almost anything, but this.....
I can't live with this pain you gave me,
I can see I never changed you one bit,
You're still the same as always.

Still the same heartless jerk I always thought you were before.

Chapter 4

Serenity's palms were sweaty as she walked into the ballroom but
she resisted the urge to wipe them on her silk dress and ruin the
fabric. Raye, Mina, Amy, and Lita all walked slightly in front of her,
gracefully holding onto their dates arms in the formal fashion. She was
without an escort and so walked alone. She could feel eyes all around
the ballroom starring at her... had she done something wrong? Why were
they looking at her like that? As though they had never seen anything
like her? Was she not good enough for something like this?

"Raye... I don't think I can do this..." Serenity spoke quietly,
nervously, to avoid gaining attention of any kind.

"Do what Sere? It's only a ball." Raye replied. A smile
graced her lips and she snuggled closer to Jadeite as he walked with
her. He glances back at Serenity and gave her an encouraging smile
before turning his attention back to Raye.

"But everyone seems to be staring at me." Serenity exclaimed,
not so loud, fearful, jittery.

"That's because you are one of the most beautiful maiden's at
the ball!" Lita replied, trying to lighten her friends troubled visage.
It didn't work. It was almost as though Serenity had never received a
compliment before, because she seemed to take them all in the wrong way.

"Are you sure they don't think I'm ugly? Maybe I shouldn't be
here. I knew this was a bad idea..."

"Sere! They don't think you're ugly! You're beautiful, now
stop worrying!" Mina exclaimed and all eight of them gave her warm
smile before turning back to their partners. Serenity's nervous faces
relaxed somewhat as she continued down the ballroom stairs with the
others.

        *       *       *       *       *       *       *       *
*

Across the room, Endymion looked up as a goddess entered the
room. At first even he didn't even recognize her. Her dress shimmered
in he pale ballroom lights and her hair wafted gently to her step,
trailing out behind her as she walked forward gracefully, seeming to
glide down the steps on air. When he finally figured out who she was,
he felt his eyes widen in disbelief. He had known Serenity was
beautiful, had seen it himself... but never in his life had he ever seen
someone as magnificent as her.

"Wow! Would you look at her!"

He jerked out of his own thoughts by the rough male voice to his
right. When Serenity had first walked in, Endymion had been oblivious
to the whispers going on around him. Now he snapped back to reality and
his sensitive ears were able to pick out a lot of them from multiple
conversations swirling through the ballroom.

"...never seen anyone so beautiful in my entire life..."

"...looks like one of those fabled Water Sprites..."

(Usa-chan: Hmm, a smart guy for once!)

(Jade: For *once*.... wonder if there are any other around here we could
borrow for a minute...)

        "...wonder if she's a princess..."

        "...she looks like a goddess..."

        "...wonder what her name is..."

He wanted to shout to them all that she was Serenity, *his*
Serenity. That no one could touch her but him. That she was his,
forever, as he was hers. But he couldn't. Not only was it improper, it
was also untrue... for her to be his, he had to purpose, and she had to
accept.. and he was very afraid to ask, because he knew that if she
didn't feel the same way about him as he did her.... then the answer
could be no.

        *       *       *       *       *       *       *       *
*

"Are you sure you don't mind Sere?" Raye asked, her dark eyes
glinting with worry and anxious excitement.

"Yes, you guys go ahead. I'll just stay back here. I did
promise your brother that I would dance with him. And I am not one to
break a promise made." Serenity replied.

"Hai. My brother." Raye said, a small, coy smile playing on
her lips, as she knew that was what Serenity was going to say. Jadeite,
who'd been standing off to the side, tapped her on the shoulder making
her look up. She blinked in surprise at the blond haired general.

"Princess, care to dance?" His asked her in a sweet, caring
voice. She beamed at him.

        "I would love too."

Serenity hung back. She watch the people dance and swirl
gracefully around the ballroom with amusement glinting in her eyes. A
picture of her mother flashed in her head. She recalled her mother's
tale about how she had fallen in love with her father with vivid
clarity. She had snuck away, transforming herself into a mortal, to
visit the earth, as Serenity did now, only without the deception. She
had explored the town, probably as awed as she had been in the
beginning. Of course, it didn't last long. Not more than an hour after
coming here she stumbled upon a group of menacing men, set out to harm
her. Her father had come to the rescue. He had invited her to the
ball, just as Endymion had, and she had eagerly accepted. She had
quickly fallen in love with him, and he had too. She had begun to meet
him secretly. The gods have disapproved of it and put him in eternal
sleep, which he still suffered in. Her mother watched over him now,
making sure that no harm came to him, even though Sere knew it broke her
heart to see him like that. She had never met him, and she was almost
positive that she never would.

She felt a tap on her shoulder, and she turned around. At first
she didn't recognize the man behind her for who she was, so she simply
stared at him in surprise. He wore a black tuxedo that seemed as though
it had been tailored for him alone, and it very well could have. A
smile was plastered onto his face and light blue eyes twinkled at her
from where he stood. Her own eyes widened. Endymion! He handed to her
a red rose, which she accepted with a small smile as she brought it to
her nose so she could smell its delicate scent.

"Care to dance, my lady?" He asked her, his eyes sparkling even
more as he watched her. She smiled at him in reply, ecstatic. Her
heart beated faster as she forgot all about her leaving, and going back
to old life. All she saw was Endymion who was right in front of her…

"Of course, Prince Endymion..." She replied, teasingly. He took
her hand and gracefully led her out onto the dance floor. He slowly
began to sway her to the soft music that played in the background, and
Serenity glanced up to see some of the woman glaring at her from a
shadowed corner of the room. She wasn't sure why, but it made her
nervous.

"Why is everyone staring at me?" She asked him finally, trying
to get something of a conversation going. She felt nervous in the room
where people started at her and gawked while she dance elegantly with
the prince. She also felt unease about this awkward silence that was
between the two of them. He smiled widely in response.

"Because, you are one of the most beautiful woman in the room."
He replied. She frowned at that and puzzlement flashed in his eyes as
to the cause of it but he quickly shrugged it off and squeezed her hand
softly once. She glanced up and offered him a beaming smile, but the
frown remained when it faded. She hoped she didn't stand out too much
here. For she wanted them to forget her when she was gone. "And maybe
even the whole world."

"Ne? I doubt that Endy." She said quietly, as someone tapped
her shoulder. She turned around in surprise and found that it was
Beryl. She looked at Serenity with a dainty smile, which seemed very
odd when compared with the loathing that practically glowed in her eyes.
Serenity flinched and instinctively clutched Endymion tighter.

"Can I cut in?" She asked, menace that was meant only for
Serenity present in her voice. She hesitated briefly but knew it would
be rude to refuse, so she nodded slowly as Endymion frowned. Quickly
letting go of the reluctant prince, she moved to get a drink and
Endymion and Beryl began to dance. She watched them for only a few
moments before she had to turn away and swiftly made for the far side of
the room.

"What do you want Beryl?" Endymion asked her in a stone cold
voice, watching in mute silence as the woman he loved moved as far away
from them as she possibly could. Her expression on her face was very
unreadable. He didn't know what she was thinking, as if she blocked him
away from her. He then put his attention back to Beryl whom held him to
close for comfort.

"Want? What do I want? All I want to do is dance with you dear
prince..." Beryl replied sweetly, irritating Endymion to no end. She
added in her mind as Endymion scowled down at her furiously.

"Well, Beryl, you should know that I'm deeply in love with
Serenity. I want to propose to her so please let me be." Endymion told
her coldly, aware now that he'd said it allowed the decision had been
made. He had no choice but to ask her now to prove the point, and he
hoped to god she wasn't going to give him the answer he dreaded
hearing... He barely noticed as Beryl looked at him with shock and
betrayal written all over her face. He was still watching as Serenity
stopped at the drink table on the opposite side of the room from where
he and Beryl were dancing.

"What? That can't be! I love you Endymion! Don't you know
that!! You can't love another woman!!" She exclaimed, loud enough so
that everyone turned their heads to look at them. Endymion started to
turn red, both in anger and embarrassment. Fear played a major part in
it as well. he thought,
as he looked over Beryl's shoulder to she Serenity gaping at him, unable
to say a thing.

        *       *       *       *       *       *       *       *
*

Serenity stood by the refreshment table, sipping her drink
slowly, enjoying standing around and watching people dance, never having
been to a ball before.

"What? That can't be! I love you Endymion! Don't you know
that!! You can't love another woman!!" Beryl exclaimed, so loud that
everyone in the ballroom heard. Endymion's face turned red as he turned
to look at her with wistful, pleading eyes.

She looked back at him in suprise, the glass she'd been holding
in her hand slipping as it fell and crashed to the floor. No one
noticed over the sudden gasps and harsh whispers that began to circulate
around the room. She didn't notice because she was in shock. She thought, astonished beyond the point of reason.
  And picking up the
skirts of her dress, she bolted out of the room as the hounds of hell
were on her heals. Endymion looked back at Beryl with disgust marring
his handsome features. He disengaged himself from her embrace and
followed the fleeing girl, leaving a fuming witch behind him, as room
full of rumors flying about as everyone who could see watched him chase
after the beautiful blond haired girl that no one else had had the
courage to approach. Neither Serenity nor Endymion noticed the eyes
boring into their backs from behind as they ran.

"Serenity! Stop! Please!!" He yelled after her, beginning to
lose ground. How could the girl run so fast in those shoes? She
stopped but did not turn around as tears fell down her face in hot,
misty tracks. She cried because they could never be together, even if
she wished they could. What she had seen had only reminded her of what
could never be.

"Serenity please, I can explain everything!" Endymion said, as
he finally caught up with her, trying to catch his breath. She was
quiet, unable to say anything. She was afraid that if she did, she
would break down and begin to sob, as her breaking heart cried out for
her to do.

"Serenity." He said, as he reached out and held her shoulders
in an iron grip. She looked down at the ground, unable to look at his
face for fear that he would see her tears and think her a fool for
falling in love with him, as she already thought herself. "Serenity..."
He cupped her chin in his hands and lightly pushed it up so they were
looking into each other's eyes. Upon seeing the tracks of tears on her
cheeks and the moisture building in her eyes he felt his heart constrict
painfully and he lightly brushed them away with his shaking fingers. "I
love you." He whispered, finally admitting what his heart had told him
the minute that he had first seen her.

She began to tremble and seconds later she burst into
controllable sobs, wrapping her arms around herself as if she could
somehow hold the tears at bay if only she could hold the pain inside.

"I love you too Endymion! But... but... it can't be... we were
never meant to be together... we never... ohh Endymion!!" She cried,
crying hard against his shoulder as he wrapped his arms around her and
held her tight against him. He
thought to himself joyously as his heart nearly burst with the love he
felt for her. He'd only known her for one day.... But it felt like a
lifetime.

"Don't cry sweet Serenity..." Endymion said, trying to make her
stop weeping but the tenderness in his voice only seemed to make her cry
harder. "Why can't we be together? Nothing is holding you back. We
could live together. Anywhere you want. We could be together Sere..."
He implored desperately, trying to figure out for himself why exactly
they could not be happy... as he knew being with her together would make
him.

She stepped back from him, or tried to, but he only tightened
his arms and the fight went out of her as she melted into him. "But
Endymion, I have a responsibility. A Responsibility that I need to
follow through in... I'm so sorry Endymion... so sorry. We can't be
together... I'm a... and your a... we can't... we can't..." She said,
fumbling for words as she tried to make him understand. Should she tell
him everything? *Could she tell him everything? She didn't know.
Wasn't sure that she wanted to know.

"I don't care Sere, we could be together, I'll do anything for
you. Anything! Please Serenity, I don't want to lose you... I've
never ever felt this way about anyone. Anyone! Not until I meet you.
I fell
in love with you the first time I laid eyes on you. The first time I
glazed into your beautiful sapphire eyes... Serenity, I just love you so
much... please don't leave me..." He begged her.

"I wish it was that easy. I was it was." She replied, as tore
herself forcefully from his arms, leaving him off balance, and ran back
into the ballroom. Endymion regained his footing and ran after her. He
entered the enormous room, not able to see her even as he searched the
whole place desperately. Since he had gone, the number of people that
had arrived for the ball had doubled.

"Damn! It would have been easier if that Beryl hadn't come
and..." He looked around once more, seeing his sister dancing almost
indecently close with Jedite. He ran up to her, eyes wild. "Raye, have
you seen Serenity?"

"Sere? No I haven't seen her. Why? What happened?" She
asked. But all Endymion heard was the first Sentence, before he had
left. Raye looked at Jedite with a puzzled face as Jedite struggled.
He began to sway her to the music again, but just as they began to turn
a full circle Raye caught sight of a certain red haired girl following
through the doors her brother had left through. She narrowed her eyes
and stopped dancing. Jadeite tried to whirl her around again but she
wouldn't budge. Confused and a tad embarrassed, he leaned down and
asked in a whisper, "Is something wrong?"

She didn't answer for a few minutes as she continued to follow
the red head with her eyes until she was out of sight. Then she turned
back to Jadeite with a worried frown. "Yeah... I think we need to keep
an eye on Endymion and find Sere. I have a bad feeling about this...
let's find the others and go after him." At first Jadeite looked
confused, but he conceded with her wishes as the two split up and began
to search the ballroom for their friends.

*       *       *       *       *       *       *       *       *

Serenity blindly led herself to the royal gardens. She never felt
so
much desire, so much love, and so much pain and suffering in one day as
she felt today. To be in love with someone, that you could never be in
love with. She didn't want to be like her mother. Yet, it seemed as if
it was happing again to her on what happen to her mother… only it was a
little different. She didn't want anything to happened to Endymion.
That would hurt her too much. Yet, it killed her to hurt him by saying
no. She didn't want to lead him on. He had to know the truth, the
truth was that they could never be together. She was still a water
spirit… and she was still half god…

She choked back a sob. 'Ohh Endymion, I wish you knew the truth.'
Tears startle to roll down her check, as she looked up at the full moon
above her. It seemed to mock her, telling her she shouldn't have been
foolish to want to go to earth. She should have stayed on the moon,
where belonged. Tears fell down quicker as she looked down at the moon.
It wasn't midnight yet, she knew that, but the time was getting nearer.
For some reason, even though all this had happened to her, she didn't
want to leave the earth that she protected so dearly. But she couldn't.

A gust of cold wind made her shiver, as she looked once more at the
full moon that seemed to light the dark night as it did every night.
Her golden hair flapped in the wind, as her magic started to wear off on
her hair, turning it back to it's regular golden color, with not one
speck of silver. She didn't notice it. She only noticed how much pain
she felt in her heart. It hurt so much not being able to love the one
that you care about so deeply. She wanted to scream out how much she
truly loved him. How she couldn't picture not being able to love him…
But she had to face the truth. She couldn't say any of that. She
wouldn't let herself.

"Serenity!!" A voice yelled out her name. She turned to see him.
Her
heart wanted to leap for joy at the sight of him, but she knew better.
Her soft eyes had become frozen, with no emotions in them, for she was
afraid to show any emotion, worried he would see her flaws. She wanted
him to leave her alone. To not make her suffer more. It already hurt
so much, she didn't want to hurt more.

"Yes Prince Endymion." She replied back so coldly, his spine had to
shiver. He looked at her, he couldn't read any expression on her face.
All he could see was an ice princess, standing there with so much
coldness and beauty.

"Serenity… you are so cold… what happened to all the warmth that you
had ever since I first saw you?" Endymion asked. Her face stayed
frozen still as she could feel her heart beating faster and faster.
Endymion then held her close. "Let me make you warm again. Please
Serenity."

Serenity closed her eyes forcefully as she laid her head on is
shoulder. What could she do, just tell him that water spirits are real?
And that she was one? She thought bitterly. She knew that couldn't be.
She couldn't tell him that. She put her arms around him too, tightening
their embrace.

"I would never have known what love was, if I never found you." She
whispered into his ear. He just bent down and kissed her on the lips.
Internal warmth filled her body, as they separated. They looked fondly
at each other, not saying a thing, not wanting to spoil the moment like
how other people had spoil it for them many times that day.

"So, you two lovebirds are okay!! We were worried about you!!" A
voice called out. They turned to see Raye, Amy, Lita, and Mina with
their dates holding them. The two blushed, but the light was so dim
outside that they couldn't notice the red on their faces.

A mystical voice then interrupted them, this voice Serenity knew
dead
away. "Serenity, dear, it's time for you to go." All ten of them
looked up to see the moon goddess herself floating above them. They all
gasp and looked amazed while Serenity went out of Endymion's embrace.
She gave a pleading look to her mother who nodded in reply.

"Ohh my gosh, it is Selene!!" Mina exclaimed. Her eyes wide in
surprise she looked up at Malacite, whose glaze was at her. Their
attention then went to Serenity who had spoke up.

"My friends. I have to leave… I'm sorry… I would miss you guys so
much." She started out, as the girls looked at her with a wider
surprise.

"What do you mean Sere?" Raye asked the blond. Selene smiled at
the
nickname. She could feel Serenity hurt as she said good-bye to her
friends. But, she noticed the way that one of the young men were
looking at her, love in his eyes. Love for her, Selene thought.

She then embraced Endymion. "I'm sorry. I told, our love could
never
be. I have to leave you… but remember this, I would never ever forget
you, or how you had showed me so much love and kindness. My heart will
always be yours sweet prince."

Endymion just watched as Serenity took on more look at them all and
disappeared like a beam of light up to the moon. Endymion looked at the
moon. His love was gone… He could feel his heart break into pieces.

*       *       *       *       *       *       *       *       *

Beryl saw the whole event. Her eyes were wide in surprise. 'How
could
this be?' She thought? 'Pitiful Serenity a water spirit?' Beryl
thought, as she went of where she just hid. She then beamed at a
thought…

Now that Serenity was gone, Endymion was all hers.

END OF CHAPTER 4

Ohh where ohh where has Jade gone... Ohh where ohh where can she
be??
