Princess Mononoke
Princess Mononoke takes place between 1392 AD and 1573 AD during a period in history where societal upheaval and transition ran rampant through Japan. Prince Ashitaka of the Emishi clan kills a wrathful boar god that is attacking his village. As a result of this battle, he is inflicted with a cursed wound, which will slowly kill him. The prince is told by the elders of the tribe to go in search of the boar’s anger and to stop that which is disturbing Mother Nature before it destroys the world.

Ashitaka journeys to the iron-making town of Iron Town (imagine that) where he meets the beautiful and kind Lady Eboshi. He soon discovers that it is the iron forge and the new weapons that the town is making that is destroying the forest and is angering the great animal gods. It is the gods fury that brings San (adopted daughter of Moro the wolf god) and her wolf brethren to attack Iron Town and attempt to kill Lady Eboshi. It is during one of these attacks that Ashitaka saves San and discovers Lady Eboshi's plan to kill the Great Forest Spirit, guardian of the forest and its creatures. He must now race against time and the curse, which ravages his body, as he must try to preserve the balance between nature and mankind as they attempt to destroy each other.

Princess Mononoke was the first feature anime that I was fortunate enough to see in a theatre. Disney was able to get many wonderful voices to be in this movie such as Gillian Anderson and Billy-Bob Thornton. The story line draws you in as you watch and you begin wonder how it all will be resolved. This is a wonderful movie though I would caution against younger viewers because of some of the more violent sequences. Princess Mononoke is definitely one to add to the collection as soon as Miramax releases it to the public.
