The next day, Serena woke up early for church. She dressed in a long navy
skirt with a white blouse and pulled her hair back in a ponytail. She made
her way to the small church in the basement of the school, that was open to
the students twentyfour hours a day.
Serena sat in her favourite pew and listened as the reverend spoke. After a
while, her mind began to drift back to Darien. She still wasn't sure what
she should do. She wanted to believe in Darien, but was too afraid of
getting hurt. Serena was pulled from her thoughts as everyone began standing
up to sing the final hymn. Serena joined in, but without her usual
enthusiasm.
When she got back to the dorm room she shared with Molly, it was well past
noon.
"Hey Mol." Serena greeted as she opened the door.
"Oh hey. Darien called. He wanted you to call him back, but said he would
be at work until late. He wants you to call him back when you can though.
Leave a message, he said." Molly told her.
"Oh. Did he leave a number?" Serena asked as she let down her hair.
"Yeah. It's by the phone." Molly gestured to the pad of paper by the
telephone the pair shared.
"Thanks." Serena sank onto her bed.
"Have you decided what you are going to do?" Molly asked.
"I think... I think I'll ask him. I need to hear what he has to say about
it all." Serena rolled onto her stomach.
"I think that's a good idea, Sere." Molly smiled at her friend.
"Okay, I'll give him a call now." Serena got off her bed and went to the
phone. She dialed the number and waited. Five rings later, she got the
answering machine.
"This is Darien. You know the drill. Wait for the beep." Serena smiled at
the sound of his voice and waited for the beep.
"Hi Darien, this is Serena. I got your message. You and I need to talk.
I'll give you a call later tonight. Hopefully you'll be home. I'll talk
to you then. Bye." Serena hung up the phone and turned to Molly. "There, I
did it."
"Good for you, Sere. Now, did you do Ms. Rapaports assignment?" Molly asked.
Serena made a face, but went to her desk and pulled out the work. Sighing,
she began to read through the short story and answer the questions.
Once she had finished, Serena put her work away. Molly was still lying across
her bed reading.
"Don't you ever get tired of reading Mol?" Serena asked. Molly shook her head
and Serena laughed. "I certainly would!"
"Yeah, but you have a real life romance Sere!" Molly teased, setting her book
aside.
"Mol? I'm afraid. What if he says that his ex was telling the truth? What if...
What if he really doesn't love me?" Serena asked, worry suddenly flooding through
her. "Molly I'm so scared!"
Molly walked across the room to embrace her friend.
"Oh Serena! Don't worry! When you are with Darien, how do you feel?" Molly
asked.
"Happy and peaceful."
"Then why do you think he would lie to you?"
"I don't know Molly. I just don't know..." Serena cried into her friend's shoulder.
"Serena, trust in your heart, and trust in Darien." Molly advised.
"Thanks Mol." Serena sniffed and wiped her tears on the sleeve of her blouse. "I
feel better now."
"That's good, why don't you call your parents? Talking to your mom can be very
therepeutic." Molly teased. Serena giggled and stood up.
"I think I will!" She smiled and went to her phone to call home. Molly smiled and
went back to her book.
Several hours later, Serena was finishing saying goodbye to her mother when Molly
gestured to her watch.
"Oh Mom! I really have to go! It's almost dinner time. I love you too! Bye!" She
hung up. "Ready to go?"
"Yup!" The two linked arms and went to the dining hall.
"Serena! Molly! Over here!" Shannon called across the room. The pair made their way
towards their friends and saw down.
"So how was your date?" Katherine asked. Molly glanced at Serena, but Serena only smiled.
"It was fine. We went on a picnic. It was really romantic." Serena told them.
"Darien sure seems perfect Sere. You are awfully lucky!" Katherine told her.
"And you should be thanking us for our brain work to get you two together!" Shannon
laughed. Serena smiled.
"Yeah, I am."
Dinner finished in a flurry of food and gossip. Before Serena knew it, she was off to her
room to call Darien before bed.
"Good luck Sere." Molly whispered as Serena finished dialing his number.
"One ring.. Two.." Serena counted quietly. "Three, four.. five. He's not home."
"Leave a message." Molly said quickly. Serena looked at her funny, but shrugged.
"Hi Darien. It's Serena again. I guess you still aren't home, so I'll have to talk
to you later. Bye..." Serena hung up and sighed. "I wonder where he is..."
"Don't worry Sere. he probably had to work late or something." Molly tried to comfort
her friend. "Just go to bed, and when you wake up tomorrow, call him again!"
"All right Molly." Serena gave a half hearted smile. She changed into her pajama's and
slipped under her covers. "Night Mol."
"Night Sere."
It seemed Serena had just shut her eyes when she felt a gentle hand clamp over her mouth.
Serena tried to scream, but she heard a familiar voice in her ear.
"Serena? It's me, Darien."
Serena sat up in shock.
"Darien?! What are you doing here?" She asked in a hushed whisper.
"I got your messages but thought it was too late to call. I was worried when you said we
needed to talk. What's wrong?" He asked her, sitting on the edge of her bed.
"Oh.. I..." Serena faltered. "It's just that..."
"Serena, you can tell me anything." Darien looked her in the eye. Serena looked away.
"I'm... That girl and..." Again she couldn't find the words to explain to him what was
going through her mind.
"You mean Raye? She said something to you?" Darien asked.
"Yes."
"What did she say, Serena?" Darien asked gently.
"She said that you would only break my heart like you broke hers..." Serena told him,
unable to look him in the eye. Darien took her in his arms.
"Oh Serena! I'm so sorry you believed that! I'm sorry she spoke to you at all!" He
exclaimed against her hair. "I love you Serena. I would never hurt you!"
"I didn't want to believe her, but I was scared Darien... I love you so much!" Serena
told him. Darien cupped her face between his hands and smothered her face with kisses.
Serena shut her eyes as his lips rained down on her face.
"Where were you today?" She asked, as she lay nestled in his arms.
"I was at work, late. I had to close." Darien told her.
"You look tired." Serena commented.
"Not really." Darien replied, stifling a yawn.
"Don't lie to me." Serena smiled.
"I want to stay with you." Darien told her. "I'll sleep later."
"Sleep here." Serena offered. Darien raised an eyebrow at her.
"Won't your headmistress or whatever mind?" He asked.
"Not if they don't know your here." Serena giggled.
"I don't want to get you in trouble, Sere." Darien told her as he slowly pulled away.
Serena pulled him back.
"You won't." She whispered in his ear.
The pair fell asleep in each other's arms. Molly quietly crept out of her bed, holding
a small black box.
"Kodak moment!" She whispered before there was a bright flash.
