Slowly Usagi opened her eyes. As the world came into focus, she noticed that the room s
he was in was all white. Her hand and leg hurt like the dickens. A soft voice said her
name.
"Usagi-chan?" Usagi turned her head to see Mamoru sitting in a chair.
"Mm? Where's Yuki?" Usagi asked as she noticed the child wasn't in the room. Mamoru
smiled.
"She's in my office asleep."
"Okay." Usagi began to close her eyes again.
"Are you okay?" Mamoru asked. Usagi nodded her head.
"Yeah. Do you think I'll be able to call in sick on my second week on the job?" Usagi
asked. Mamoru chuckled.
"Yeah, I think they'll accept your reason."
"Okay." Usagi said sleepily as she drifted off.
~~
The second time Usagi woke up, Yuki was sitting with Mamoru in the chair. Both
were sleeping peacefully, and Usagi smiled. Mamoru's eyes slowly opened and he
saw that she was awake.
"Hey! Are you feeling better?" Mamoru asked as he shifted slightly, careful of
the Yuki in his arms.
"Yeah. Have you been here long?" Usagi asked as she tried to sit up.
"Don't do that! Stay where you are." Mamoru told her. "I've been waiting here
since you came in. I left to get Yuki, but came back."
"Why did you do that?" Usagi asked.
"I was worried." Mamoru told her. "So was Yuki."
"Huh? Wha..?" Yuki asked as she began to wake.
"Hey Yuki-chan." Usagi called softly. Yuki lifted her head from Mamoru's chest
quickly and looked over at Usagi.
"Tsukino-sensei! You're alive!" Yuki exclaimed.
"Of course I am! Mamoru-san took good care of me." Usagi replied, smiling.
"I bet you're mad this time." Yuki said, looking away.
"Yuki-chan, look at me." Usagi said. Yuki slowly raised her eyes to meet her
teacher's. "It was an accident, Yuki-chan. I can't get mad at you for an accident.
You didn't mean to hurt me." Usagi said carefully and slowly. She wanted to make
Yuki understood. Having met Mamoru's ex, Usagi knew she needed to help this girl
realize that not everything that mean lady said was true.
"Yuki-chan, did you really think Usagi would get mad at you?" Mamoru asked her in
surprise. "Is that why you were so worried?" Yuki nodded slowly and looked at
Mamoru through lowered eyelashes. Usagi giggled as she recognized the way she
looked at her father when she thought she was in a lot of trouble.
"Oh Yuki-chan!" Usagi exclaimed, holding her arms out to the girl. Yuki clambered
off of Mamoru and onto Usagi's hospital bed. Careful of the injured leg, Yuki
nestled against Usagi. Usagi hugged Yuki tightly. Mamoru smiled as he watched
the two. The door opened and a nurse came> in with a tray.
"Chiba-san, you should go home and rest!" The nurse exclaimed as her gaze fell
on Usagi and Yuki. The nurse quietly stepped out and sighed. The two had looked
positively angelic together.
"Mizuno-san!" the nurse exclaimed as Ami stood outside the door.
"Is she awake?" Ami asked. The nurse nodded.
"Yes. I think she just woke up."
"Is that her food?" the nurse nodded. "I'll take it in to her." Smiling, Ami
took the tray and opened the door. Unlike the nurse, her gaze swept the room
before she spoke. She took in the loving gaze Mamoru had fixed on Usagi and
Yuki, and the way Usagi and Yuki were smiling at each other.
"Usagi-chan? I brought your dinner." Ami said as she stepped forward to set
the tray on the swinging table.
"Thanks Ami-chan." Usagi said.
"How are you feeling?"
"Better, I guess. Is there anything edible on the tray?" Usagi asked. "I remember
the hospital food from my volunteer days."
"Uh.." Ami replied as she lifted the lid.
"Ooh! Jello!" Usagi exclaimed, grabbing the small plastic cup. Ami laughed
and Mamoru looked at her surprised.
"What?" Usagi asked through a mouthful of Jello.
"Nothing, Usagi-chan. You certainly haven't changed." Ami smiled.
"Should I have?" Usagi asked.
"No. Not at all!" Ami shook her head. Usagi laughed before turning her attention
back to the tray.
"Chicken, Mashed potatoes..." Usagi looked up at Mamoru. "Have either of you eaten?"
"Not yet. We.." Mamoru began.
"Will be eating with me." Usagi said as she began dividing up the food on the
tray. "Do you like potatoes Yuki-chan?"
"Only the mashed kind." Yuki replied. She sat up on the bed to allow Usagi easier
access to the tray.
"I'll go see what else I can find for you three." Ami said as she slipped out
of the room. Usagi cut the chicken into three equal portions before cutting one
into small pieces.
"Here you go Yuki-chan." Usagi handed her a plate with vegetables, chicken and
mashed potatoes.
"Thank you." Yuki said, smiling and eating happily. Usagi watched her for a
few minutes, with a small smile on her lips, before turning back to the tray.
"Here you go, Mamoru-san." She held a plate out> to him.
"No thanks. You eat it." Mamoru said, remaining in his seat.
"No way! You need to eat too. I'll bet you haven't had anything except coffee
all day." Usagi said, still holding the plate out. Mamoru still made no move to
get it.
"You're injured. You need your strength." Mamoru told her.
"Mamoru-san." Usagi warned. "If you don't come eat this, I will come to you and
make you eat it."
Mamoru shook his head.
"If you get out of that bed, I will be forced to take drastic measures. You can
really hurt your leg if you walk on it." He told her.
"All the more reason for you to come eat this." Usagi countered.
"I'm fine. Really! You need your strength."
"Mamo-chan? I'm sleepy. I'm going to go back> to our office, okay?" Yuki asked.
"Sure, Yuki-chan. Do you remember the way?" Mamoru asked. Yuki nodded and smiled
shyly at Usagi.
"Bye."
"Bye Yuki-chan." Usagi replied, smiling back. As Yuki shut the door, Usagi's eyes
narrowed on Mamoru. She brushed her long blonde hair back with one hand before
shoving the table aside.
"You asked for it." She said as she slipped her legs over the edge of the bed and
stood up.
"No! You need to stay off your legs!" Mamoru said as he jumped to his feet and
scooped her up. "I don't want to cause anymore damage."
"You are being irrational." Usagi told him, realizing just how he was holding
her. "I'm fine. My leg is fine. I can walk."
"No." Mamoru stated softly and firmly before setting her back in her bed.
"Eat and I'll stay put." Usagi said as she held the plate under his nose.
"Fine." Mamoru sighed as he sat on the edge of her bed and began to eat the
chicken and potatoes.
"Hmph." Usagi said softly before turning to her own tray.
"Excuse me?" Mamoru asked. Usagi looked up at him through her lashes and twisted
her hair around her finger.
"Nothing." She said innocently. Mamoru raised any eyebrow before setting his tray down.
"No, I think you said something." He insisted.
"Nope. Nothing at all." Usagi shook her head before beginning to eat her chicken.
Mamoru laughed and began to eat the food on his plate.
"Are you going to come to Yuki's party next weekend?" Mamoru asked as his eyes
focused on the plate. Usagi raised an eyebrow as she looked at him.
"Who else is coming?" she asked.
"Most of the class." Mamoru replied. "I would really appreciate the help. I know
the children will all listen to their beloved Tsukino-sensei too."
Usagi smiled widely and nodded her head.
"I'll come. What time?" She tilted her head to the side.
"Sometime around 11:00." Mamoru told her. "Yuki wanted to have a pool party."
"You have a pool?" Usagi asked in surprise. Mamoru nodded. "Okay, I'll come with
my bathing suit!" Usagi exclaimed as she giggled.
"Uh-uh." Mamoru shook his head. "You can't swim with that cut. The chlorine would
be really bad for it."
"I can still wear my bathing suit. Maybe tan a bit." Usagi suggested thoughtfully.
~~
Friday after school, Yuki sat at one of the desks quietly as they waited for
Mamoru. Usagi watched her thoughtfully.
"Tsukino-sensei?" Yuki asked timidly. "Are you coming tomorrow?"
"Yes, of course Yuki-chan!" Usagi smiled at her pupil. She brushed off her
short skirt, wary of her throbbing leg. It hurt. A lot, but she didn't want
to let on. She knew that Yuki would feel awful if she knew. Usagi had taken
to wearing her shorter skirts since the accident because it hurt too much to
have the material brush her wound. The other teacher's had been sympathetic,
and the principal hadn't said a word about the inappropriate clothing.
"Good!" Yuki exclaimed as Mamoru appeared at the door.
"Hello Yuki-chan, Usagi-chan." Mamoru smiled brightly at Usagi, who returned
the smile.
"Mamo-chan!" Yuki squealed as she dove across the room and gripped him in a
flying tackle.
"Mamoru-san? Can I talk to you for a minute?" Usagi asked. Mamoru looked up at
her concerned.
"Sure. Yuki-chan, why don't you go get your jacket and bag?" Mamoru suggested
as he moved towards where Usagi stood.
"Mamoru-san, I'm concerned about Yuki. She's been uncharacteristically quiet
and subdued all week." Usagi told him.
"I know. She's been that way since the accident last week." Mamoru replied.
Usagi's eyes were full of concern.
"Oh I bet she still blames herself!" Usagi exclaimed as a spasm of pain hit her.
She grimaced ad gripped the edge of her desk tightly.
"Usagi!" Mamoru exclaimed in surprise. "Are you alright?" He helped her into a
chair and lifted her skirt enough to look at her leg. He tried to make his face
a mask of clinical expertise while his eyes betrayed his worry. Gently, he pressed
the skin around the slash, only to have Usagi wince more. He looked up into her eyes.
"Usagi-chan, this is infected! You should have seen a doctor sooner." He chided
her. Yuki stood at the edge of Usagi's desk and watched.
"I suppose so, but..." Usagi began.
"No buts! You need to have this looked at in a.. Never mind. I'll be back in
a minute." Mamoru said as he got up and began to leave the room. "Yuki-chan,
make sure she stays in that chair and doesn't move, alright?" Yuki nodded and
stood watching Usagi, who smiled at Yuki.
"You look so worried, Yuki-chan. There is nothing to be worried about! Why don't
you come sit with me, alright?" Usagi asked as she held he> arms out to the little
girl. Yuki's eyes lit up and she cautiously made her way closer to Usagi's chair.
"No, I'd better not. I'll just make it worse." Yuki said as she stood at the edge
of Usagi's chair.
"No you won't!" Usagi said as she picked Yuki up and sat her down on her good leg.
"See?"
Mamoru came back in holding a black medical bag. He smiled a bit at the picture
Usagi and Yuki made. They looked like sisters, or mother and daughter. Mamoru
wasn't sure why, but he knew he liked that second option better.
"Alright, Yuki-chan, you'll have to get down so I can look at her leg again." Mamoru
said as he set the bag on Usagi's desk and picked Yuki up. He set her on her feet
before kneeling down in front of Usagi again.
"I'll go play with the blocks." Yuki said as she walked, more happily Usagi noticed,
towards the games.
"I'm going to clean it with some alcohol. It's going to hurt." Mamoru told Usagi as
he put on his latex gloves. He covered a cotton swab in alcohol and gently rubbed
it over Usagi's leg. She gasped and clenched her teeth against the pain. The alcohol
stung her cut, even though Mamoru was being careful. She clenched her teeth and
hoped Yuki wasn't watching.
No such luck. Usagi could hear Yuki trying to muffle her sobs against a pillow.
Guilt shot through Usagi, who was trying to hold back her own tears. Mamoru
looked up at Usagi and could tell there was a lot of pain.
"I'm sorry..." He whispered. Usagi smiled as best she could in her condition.
"It's not your fault." She told him. Mamoru quickly finished by putting
polysporin on the wound and bandaging it.
"Now, let me check that tomorrow, alright?" He told her. Usagi smiled wider
and nodded.
"Yuki-chan!" She called out in a sing song voice. Yuki's head shot up and
she frantically tried to wipe away her tears.
"Oh Yuki-chan! You need to stop blaming yourself for these things. Accidents
happen." Usagi told her. "I don't blame you. Mamoru-san doesn't blame you,
so you shouldn't blame you either."
Mamoru was impressed with the way Usagi handled it. He smiled gratefully at her
as he saw Yuki smile like a great burden had been lifted from her shoulders.
"Now, you go home and get lots of rest so that when tomorrow rolls around, you
are full of energy!" Usagi exclaimed.
"Alright Tsukino-sensei!" Yuki grabbed her backpack and jacket.
"Thanks, Usagi-chan." Mamoru smiled at her. "I'll see you tomorrow, bright
and early?"
"Sure thing." Usagi replied. "Bye Mamoru-san, bye Yuki-chan! See you tomorrow!"
~~
Usagi rang the doorbell of the large house and waited patiently for someone to
answer the door. She held a nicely wrapped box in one hand and had a back slung
over her shoulder. Usagi was wearing a white slip dress and a pair of white
sneakers. She had a pair of sunglasses resting on her head.
"Hey Usagi-chan!" Mamoru greeted as he let her into his house.
"I like you house, Mamoru-san." She told him. "This is for Yuki-chan."
"Tsukino-sensei!" Yuki cried, running down the stairs and wrapping her arms
around her teacher's good leg.
"Happy birthday Yuki-chan." Usaig handed the little girl her present.
"Oh! Thank you!" Yuki accepted it happily. Mamoru grinned.
"Why don't you go put it with the ones I gave you? Mamoru suggested.
"Okay." Yuki skipped through the house.
"Do you need help with anything?" Usagi asked as Mamoru led her through the
house.
"Not really. I'm just going to barbeque some hamburgers and hot dogs." He told
her.
"Alright. Do you have tables and chairs set up outside?" Usagi asked. Mamoru
nodded.
"Yeah." Mamoru opened the back door that led to the pool patio. It was nicely
decorated, with a large pool. There were little white tables and matching chairs
spread around the pool and yard. There were also a few lounge chairs.
"Mamo-chan? Can I go swimming now?" Yuki asked. Mamoru smiled at her, and shook
his head.
"Don't you want to wait for your friends?" He asked her.
"I guess." She turned to Usagi. "Tsukino-sensei, do you have a bathing suit?"
"Yup. It's in my bag." Usagi told her.
"Do you want to change into it?"
Usagi laughed at Yuki's eagerness and nodded.
"Alright."
"This way!" Yuki led Usagi back into the house and into a large bathroom.
"Thank you Yuki-chan." Usagi shut the door and quickly changed into her cerulean
blue bikini. she slipped a darker blue sarong around her hips, hiding the ugly
cut so Yuki didn't feel bad. Usagi's had was bandaged carefully. When Usagi
opened the door, Yuki was waiting.
"Wow! You look beautiful!" Yuki exclaimed. Usagi laughed.
"Thank you, Yuki-chan." Serena's hair was done, and fell around her like a cloak
of gold.
"She's right. You do look gorgeous." Mamoru told her, softly. Usagi blushed.
"Thanks."
Just then the doorbell rang, breaking the intimate connection between Usagi and
Mamoru.
"I'll get it!" Yuki exclaimed.
"I'd better go too..." Mamoru turned, albeit reluctantly, and followed Yuki to the
door.
"Hello Mamoru-san!" It was Akane. "Are you going to be able to handle all these
kids?"
"Hi Hazumi-chan!" Yuki greeted her friend.
"Well, Usagi-chan is here, to help." Mamoru told her.
"You two can handle it?" She asked. "I just want to make sure."
"If you want to stay, you are welcome to." Mamoru told her.
"No, that's okay." Akane shook her head. "I'll see you later, Hazumi-chan. Behave!"
"Bye Mom." Hazumi waved before following Yuki into the backyard where Usagi was.
A stream of children began to arrive, all thrilled to see Tsukino-sensei there.
Usagi found herself sitting in the lounge chair watching the children dive and swim,
each calling to her for her attention. She laughed cheerily and smiled brightly
at their antics.
"Do you have sunscreen on?" A deep voice asked in her ear. Usagi whipped her head
around and saw Mamoru standing there.
"Oh! I forgot it!" Usagi exclaimed.
"Here." Mamoru held up a bottle. "I'll do your back if you want."
"Thanks." Usagi sat up and turned so Mamoru could rub the sunscreen into her
back. Once he was finished, Usagi returned the favour before she put it on her
arms and legs.
"Don't forget your nose." Mamoru told her, putting a bit on the tip of her nose.
"Thanks." Usagi giggled.
The party seemed to fly by with a hitch. Usagi was glad that the children were
all well behaved. She knew what a handful they could be. By the time five
o'clock rolled around, and the children began going home, Usagi was almost
glad to see them go. She was exhausted from spending the entire day in the
sun with completely energized children.
"Bye!" Usagi called to the last guest to go home. She turned back to Mamoru who
looked as tired as she did. Yuki had fallen asleep outside, on the lounge chair
Usagi had been occupying.
"I'll go put her in her room." Mamoru told Usagi before picking Yuki up and
carrying her up the stairs. Usagi waited for him at the bottom of the stair
well, still dressed in her bikini.
When Mamoru came down stairs, he smiled at her.
"Thanks for helping out."
"No problem." Usagi replied, stifling a yawn.
"Why don't we relax and watch a bit of tv?" Mamoru suggested.
"Okay." Usagi agreed. Mamoru led her into the tv room and they sank into the soft
leather couch. Mamoru flicked on the tv.
As they were watching the news, Usagi began to fall asleep. She was so tired,
she couldn't keep her eyes open any longer. She fell into a deep sleep, falling
against Mamoru in the process.
Mamoru was a little surprised when he fel the blonde lean against him, but smiled
at her sleeping face. He gently wrapped his arm around her, before falling asleep
himself.
That's the picture Yuki found when she wandered into the tv room a few hours later.
