Darien walked past Serena's room that night before he went to bed. He heard muffled
sobs coming from inside, and wanted to go in to make her feel better, but he knew
there was nothing he could do. She needed to cry and wear out all the grief.
Holding back tears of his own, Darien went to his room. He quickly changed from his
ever present suit to a pair of black pajama's before heading back down to the kitchen.
He opened the fridge and pulled out a plate of cookies before flipping the kettle on.
He pulled a mug from the shelf and grabbed a can of hot chocolate powder. When the
water had boiled, Darien made himself some hot chocolate. He took the cookies and mug
to the table and sat down to think.
He knew what Serena was going to. He understood the confusion, anger, hurt, guilt and
certainty that no one else understood. Darien didn't know if he should tell Serena.
He wasn't sure where he stood with her and he knew she didn't either. He hadn't made
an effort at trying to explain his place in her past because he didn't have one. He
wasn't sure how she would take it if she thought she was his charity case.
Darien sipped the hot chocolate as he continued to think. Serena seemed to be getting
along with her friends, but she didn't remember them. She also didn't say anything
about the name Serena Shields on the credit card.
He picked up a cookie and began to nibble on it. He glanced over at the door way and was
surprised to see Serena standing there.
"How long have you been there?" He asked.
"Not long." She replied, her fingers fidgeting with the edge of her night gown.
"Would you like some hot chocolate?" Darien asked. Serena nodded and came further into
the kitchen. She sat down as Darien made another mug of hot cocoa for her.
"Thanks." Serena told him as he set it down in front of her. They sat in their in silence
for a few minutes. Serena sipped from her mug and gazed out the window. Darien watched
her as he finished his cookie.
"I don't know you, do I?" Serena asked him suddenly. Darien looked at her in surprise. "I
mean, when I try to recall a memory of you, any memory, I can't. When I think hard
enough about Lita or Raye, or Ami or Mina, I get some sort of flash about them. I can
almsot remember them, but with you, there's nothing."
"I..." Darien didn't know what to say. He couldn't lie to her, but could she handle the
truth? "Your right. We never met before your accident."
"Then why am I here?" Serena asked.
"When I was six years old, my family's car drove off a cliff. My parents were killed
instantly and I was left alone. I grew up in an orphanage with no memory of anything.
The only thing my parents left me was the family business, and I didn't find that until
a few years ago." Darien spoke calmly. "When I read about you in the paper, I... It all
came back to me. All the anguish at waking up alone, with no memories. The pain, the
guilt, the anger... I didn't want you to experience that."
"You... understand?" She asked. Darien nodded. "But I don't know you."
"No." Darien replied.
Serena sat there, sipping her hot chocolate and thinking. Darien watched as she thought
through everything he had just told her and he couldn't help but notice how gorgeous she
looked. She was wearing a short white night gown, and her long blonde hair fell loosely
down her back like a waterfall. She held the mug tightly between her hands, trying to
absorb the warmth of it.
"You just took me in." She said quietly.
"Yes."
"With no other reason than to help me."
"Yes."
Serena sighed and set the mug down. She stood up and went to the patio door. She placed
one hand on the glass door and watched as the backyard was slowly filled with snow. Darien
just watched her standing there.
"Did you ever feel that if you had done something differently, they wouldn't have died?
That it was your fault, your punishment for something...?" She didn't look at him as she
spoke. Darien looked at her reflection in the window.
"Yes." He said softly.
"You wish you could just go back in time and change something, anything, so that they could
still be alive today? So you wouldn't be alone?" Serena almost choked on the words as
tears began to pour down her cheeks. "I still can't believe they are gone, and I feel worse
for not remembering them..."
Darien stood behind Serena and wrapped his arms around her.
"It's not your fault the accident happened, or that you can't remember them, Serena. In
time, you will remember everything. You will remember the way your mom cooked, and what
your father liked to do after work. You will remember the way you and your brother fought
and argued over what to watch on TV. You will remember each of yur friends and what they
like best. I promise you, Serena."
By this time, Serena had turned in his arms and buried her face in his chest. His shirt
was soaked through with her tears, but he didn't care.
"There's nothing you could have done differently Serena. Nothing..." He whispered into her
ear. Slowly her tears subsided.
"I know.. I just wish..." She let her voice trail off.
Finally she pulled away.
"Thank you." Serena stepped away from Darien and headed towards the kitchen
door. "I'll see you in the morning."
"Night." Darien replied, relieved that she knew the truth and had dealt with
it. He had expected a far less mature response, but then, anyone would
mature a lot after learning that their family had died. Even a fourteen
year old.
