The next morning found Darien sitting next to Serena's bed once again. He couldn't
afford to miss another day in the office, but he wanted to see her to make sure she
was all right and to check if the nurse had arrived. She had. The nurse was a
short, pretty woman in her early forties, but very efficiant. Darien also liked
her maternal nature. Darien knew the girl would be in good hands.
With that thought, Darien stood up and gently brushed his hand across the girl's
exposed cheek. She moved slightly in her sleep, but remained inconscious. Sighing,
Darien left the hospital room and moved down the corridor to the elevator. He stepped
into the elevator and pressed the main floor button.
With a lurch, the elevator headed down. Darien noticed that he was alone on the
elevator, but though nothing of it. At the next floor, a raven haired girl
stepped on, looking very upset.
"I'm sorry, I couldn't help but notice... Is something wrong?" Darien asked.
"My friend... She was in an accident and admitted her, but I can't find her." The
girl sobbed.
"Did you try asking at the main desk?" Darien asked gently.
"Yes... They said that her location was classified..." the girl's violet eyes were
filled with tears.
"This girl... Tell me about her." Darien was pretty sure he knew who it was. It was like
Jed to ensure the girl's information be classified so that there were fewer questions.
"She's my age, with blonde hair and blue eyes. She's shorter than me though." The girl
sniffed. "She was in a car accident. Her family was killed and none of us, her friends
that is, have been able to find her."
"What's her name?" Darien asked, now sure of who it was.
"Serena. Serena Moon."
Darien pulled out his cellphone and quickly dialed a number.
"Jed? Yeah, get me all the information you can on a Serena Moon. Yes." Darien paused.
"I noticed. Her friend was looking for her. Right. Fax it to me at the office. Thanks."
Darien shut his phone with a snap and turned to the girl. "Your friend is in the ICU unit
one floor above you." And with that, Darien stepped out of the elevator leaving a stunned
girl in the elevator.
Smiling to himself, Darien went to his car and got in. He drove to his office still
pleased that he had been able to learn the name of the girl.
'Serena.' He though to himself. 'That's a pretty name.'
Darien pulled into the underground parking at his office and got out of his car. After
locking the doors and setting the alarm, and stepped into the elevator. Quietly he rode
the elevator to the top floor where he got out.
"Any messages?" He asked his secretary.
"Mr.Calloway is furious that you skipped that meeting. Also, Mr.David called about
the dinner meeting you were supposed to be at. Where were you, anyway?" Rose asked.
"At the hospital."
"Oh! Is everything okay?" She exclaimed.
"Yes." Darien didn't care to expand as he went into his office and shut the door. He saw
down at his computer and began working and trying to create a new proposal. Darien lost
track of time until someone knocked on his door.
"Mr. Shields?" A voice asked as the door inched open. It was Kaitlyn, the lunch delivery
girl.
"Yes?" Darien asked, looking up.
"Did you want anything?" She asked, holding up the large basket full of sandwiches.
"Is it lunch already?" Darien asked, glancing at his watch. Seeing that it was almost
twelve thirty, Darien leapt from his chair, grabbed his jacket and dashed out of the office.
"Hold the elevator!" He called and quickly got on. "Thanks."
By the time he reached the garage, he was anxious to get to the hospital. He unlocked his
car and shut the alarm off as fast as he could. He drove quickly to the hospital and
parked. Darien ran in and raced up to the ICU to see Serena. When he got there, he noticed
that there were three doctors in there.
"What's wrong?" He asked, immediately concerned, as he shoved the door open.
"Nothing, Mr.Shields. She just woke up." One of the doctor's said calmly. Darien
looked down to see that in fact Serena had woken up. From the drowsyness of her eyes, he
figured it was within the last half hour.
"There you are Darien!" Jed exclaimed from the door. "I was just trying to call you. You
scared Rose and Kait leaving the office that quickly."
"How are you feeling?" Darien asked Serena as he looked down at her.
"Who are you?" She asked, confusion filling her eyes.
"My names Darien." He told her. "Are you feeling all right?"
"I hurt... Where am I? What happened?" Serena asked.
"You.. There was an accident." Darien told her gently. "Your in the hospital. You have
been for three days now."
"Oh."
"All right, everything seems to be all right. There was no brain damage, but we'll need to
talk to you outside, Mr.Shields." One of the other doctor's told him.
"All right. Jed can you...?" Darien asked.
"Of course." Jed stepped further into the room and sat next to Serena. Darien followed
the doctors outside.
"What is it?"
"She has amnesia. She doesn't remember anything from before the accident."
The words hit Darien like a ton of bricks. He felt like a six year old child all over
again, waking up and not remembering who he was. At least Serena would know her real
name, and she had friends. Her friends would help her...
"All right." Darien said hoarsly. "What should we do?"
"Its best to take her home as soon as possible. The familiar setting might help her
regain her memories and heal faster."
"I don't know where she lives, but I'll try." Darien thought for a minute.
"What do you mean you don't know?" The doctor asked alarmed.
"I don't know this girl. I've never met her before." Darien explained. "When I was six,
my family was killed in an accident. I don't remember them... It was horrible... I just
wanted to help her."
"Well, points to you for being a good samaritan then." The doctors walked away leaving
Darien to go back to Serena.
