When Darien re-entered the ICU, he saw Jed talking quietly to Serena.
He paused in the doorway to watch them, more specifically her.

Serena was absolutely beautiful even though she was covered in bandages and
and bruises. Her blue eyes were the colour of the summer sky and they
sparkled with an intensity Darien had never seen before. After a few
minutes, he stepped further into the room.

"I hear I have you to thank for the best medical care in Japan." Serena
said as she noticed him. "Thank you."

"It was nothing." Darien told her, though secretly pleased.

"I'll go to your office and hold down the fort, so to speak." Jed said,
standing up and leaving the two alone. Darien sat in the recently
vacated chair next to Serena's bed.

"Where's my family? My mother, my father and my brother?" Serena asked.
Darien looked away, unable to tell her.

"Where are they?" She asked, sitting up. "Where?!"

By now her voice was hysteric. Darien looked back at her, and his eyes met
hers. He opened his mouth to tell her that they were okay, and in another
hopsital, but he found he couldn't lie to her. Not with her eyes gazing
into his.

"They're dead. They died instantly." Darien said softly. Serena's eyes
filled with tears and she began to sob violently. Darien moved to sit on
the edge of her bed and hold her. Gently he rocked her back and forth,
trying to comfort her. Serena pulled away violently.

"Why am I here? Why did I survive?" She asked. Serena began pulling at the
tape that was holding the IV tubes in. "Why didn't I die with them?"

"Serena! Stop it! Stop it right now!" Darien caught her hands before she
could tear the needles out. "What are you doing?!"

Serena slumped against him in tears. Darien held her tightly while she
cried herself out against his chest.

"Why... Why?" She moaned. Darien just held her.
