"Hi, is Serena there please?" A voice asked.
"Speaking."
"Hi Sere. It's Amy."
"Oh hi Ames! What's up?"
"Lita and I were wondering if you wanted to hang out for
a bit today."
"I'd love to, but Darien practically has me under house
arrest 'cause I was so sick. Why don't you two stop by?
We can swim and stuff." Serena suggested.
"Really? That'd be great!" Amy replied.
"How about you sleep over too?" Serena asked.
"Okay. We'll be there in about an hour, okay?"
"Yeah Ames. I'll see you then." Serena hung up the phone and
ran down to the kitchen. "Hey Nathan? I have a few friends
coming over to spend the night. Do we have any junk food I can
feed them?"
"No Serena, but I'll go get some for you." Nathan offered.
"That's okay. Don't go to the trouble." Serena replied.
"It's no trouble at all. I was going to go out anyway." Nathan
smiled at her.
"Thanks." Serena smiled back before going to Darien's study.
She knocked gently before opening the door. Darien was on the
phone and signalled to her that he would only be a minute.
"Yes Serena?" He asked as he hung up the phone.
"I have a couple of friends coming over to spend the night.
You don't mind, do you?" She asked.
"Not at all! I'd love to meet them." Darien told her smiling.
"Okay, I'll be sure to introduce you then." Serena smiled back.
"How are you feeling?"
"Fine. Geez Darien, I only had the flu!" Serena exclaimed. Her
eyes were sparkling though, showing how happy she was.
"I know, but it was enough to warrant a night in the hospital."
Darien replied. Serena sighed and shook her head before leaving
his study.
When the doorbell rang, Serena flew down the stairs to get it.
Lita and Amy were standing there with duffel bags.
"Hey!" Serena greeted, throwing her arms around her friends.
"Hi Sere. Long time no see." Lita smiled.
"How are you feeling?" Amy asked.
"I'm fine Ames! You're almost as bad as Darien." Serena
laughed as she shut the door behind her friends.
"And when do we get to meet this infamous Darien?" Lita asked.
"I'm famous now, am I?" Darien asked from the doorway of his
study. He had heard the doorbell and, knowing that Nathan was
out, had gone to get it. Serena had beat him, but he took the
opportunity to watch her with her friends.
"So your Darien?" Amy asked.
"Yes. I'm Darien Shields." Darien stepped forward and offered his
hand to Amy, and then to Lita.
"Shields... As in Shields Corporation?" Amy asked.
"Why, yes actually." Darien replied.
"Wow, Sere! He looks just like my old boyfriend." Lita
whispered. Serena laughed.
"We're going to go outside and swim, okay Darien?" She asked.
"Sure. I've got to get back to work. It was nice meeting you
though." Darien smiled and went back into his study.
"Come on Amy, Lita." Serena led them into the backyard. "Welcome
to my humble abode."
"Humble, eh?" Lita asked. Laughing, the girls quickly took off their
clothes to reveal bathing suits. They splashed aroud in the pool for
a while, before Lita sat on the edge.
"Is something wrong?" Serena asked, staying in the water near Lita's
feet.
"Serena, you realize that Darien has been watching us for the past
half hour, don't you?" Lita asked.
"What are you talking about? Darien's way to busy to be playing
babysitter." Serena looked puzzled.
"Look over my shoulder. See him? He's been standing there, watching you
for quite some time." Lita told her.
"What are you getting at Lita?" Amy asked, coming up to join the other
two.
"I'm not sure. Just be careful, okay Sere?" Lita asked, hopping back
into the water.
"Sure thing, Lita." Serena promised before pushing off from the wall
and swimming away.
Her thoughts remained on Darien for the rest of the afternoon. She had
noticed him watching her before, but always thought it was because he
was her guardian. Could it be something else? Shaking her head, Serena
climbed out of the water and stretched. She lay on one of the lounge chairs
and watched as Lita and Amy had swimming contests.
"Is something wrong, Serena?" Darien asked. Serena looked up, startled.
"When did you get out here?" She asked.
"I was just passing throught the kitchen and I saw you sitting here. I
wanted to make sure you were feeling all right."
"Yeah, I'm fine." Serena smiled.
"Okay. Nathan's back with some stuff for you." Darien told her as he headed
back inside.
Lita was probably mistaken. Darien had probably been passing through a
few times and she saw him. Satisfied with that explanation, Serena stood
back up and went to the edge of the pool.
"You guys want to go in for a bit? I'll show you my room and stuff." Serena
told them.
Later that night, Serena, Amy and Lita were sitting around Serena's room.
"I really like this place." Amy said.
"It's really nice, Sere." Lita agreed.
"Thanks."
"What do you say we go check out the pool at night?" Lita asked.
"Our suits are still wet though." Amy put in.
"Not swim, just look. It should be gorgeous in the moonlight." Lita
replied.
"Okay." Serena stood up. She was wearing the dress shirt she had borrowed
from Darien on her first night there. Serena had never gotten around
to returning it.
As they stepped out onto the patio, the three went to the edge of the pool.
"Wow! It is pretty!" Amy exclaimed, looking up at the night sky.
"Yeah." Serena replied, staring at the moon. Without warning, Lita pushed
Serena into the pool.
A sputtering Serena surfaced to find her two bestfriends laughing.
"Ooh Lita! I'm gonna get you!" Serena threatened. Laughing, Lita moved
towards the house with Amy in tow.
"Your gonna have to catch me first!" Lita and Amy took off running inside the
house. Serena clambered up the stairs in the pool and ran inside after them,
dripping wet. As she ran down the hallway, she slammed right into Darien.
Serena fell to the ground, but Darien managed to keep his balance.
"Oh I'm sorry!" She exclaimed as she smiled sheepishly up at him. Darien's
gaze drifted up her long legs, taking in the picture she made with the
wet and clingy shirt.
"Don't worry about it..." Darien said, his voice huskier than usual, before
reaching down, he helped Serena up. "You should go put some dry clothes on,
before you get sick."
"Right..." Serena agree, standing close to Darien. His arm that he had
used to help her up was still around her. Realizing this, Serena pulled
away, blushing slightly. She quickly ran up the stairs to her room, with
Darien's eyes following her the whole way.
"You two seem to be getting along much better." Nathan commented from the
doorway, before disappearing into the kitchen.
