"Are you sure this looks alright?" Serena asked again, twirling
around in front of her mother.

"Yes, Serena dear! You look dazzling." Her mother replied, smiling
at her daughter.

""But I have to look perfect! I want to impress all of Darien's
friends!" Serena exclaimed.

"Is there more going on with this Darien then I know about?" Ilene
asked, teasing Serena. Serena frowned at her mother as the doorbell rang.

"Oh! Mom you get it!" Serena bit her lip nervously. Ilene
laughed and went down the stairs to get the door.

"Hello." Ilene greeted with a smile as she opend the front door.
"You must be Darien."

"Yes." Darien smiled. "I'm Darien Chiba."

"I'm Ilene Tsukino. Please, come in!" Ilene opened the door wider
to let Darien inside. She glanced over him, and smiled her approval.

Dressed in a black tuxedo, Darien looked absolutely stunning.
Holding a bouquet of roses, he was exactly the type of dashing young man she
pictured her daughter with.

"Serena will be down in just a few moments. Would you care to have
a seat?" Ilene gestured to the living room.

"Thank you." Darien took a seat where he could still see the stairs.
He was anxious to see Serena, and to show her off to all his peers, even if
they weren't official dating. Yet...

"Ahh... Here she is." Ilene watched Darien's face carefully, and
almost laughed as his jaw dropped. Serena was wearing a long white gown,
with slits on each side of the narrow skirt. The dress was rather form
fitting, and nothing Ken would let his little girl out of the house in.

"You look... amazing..." Darien whispered. Serena blushed, and
smiled.

	"Thanks."

"These are for you." Darien held the roses out to her, and Serena
accepted them happily.

"I'll put those in water for you, so you two can be on your way."
Ilene took the flowers and watched as Darien escorted Serena out to his
car.

Darien watched Serena's eyes light up as she saw his car. It was,
he had to admit, a nice car, and it pleased him that she was impressed.

After helping her inside, Darien got in the driver's side. He
started up the car, and carefully backed out of her driveway.

"So... Is there anything I should know about this thing before we
get there?" Serena asked nervously. Darien glanced at her and was instantly
captivated by her looks. He had to force himself to turn his attention
back to the road.

"Nope, not really. There won't be much time for socializing before
they start the dinner and ceremony." Darien replied.

"Okay." Serena was quiet, just staring out the window, watching the
scenery fly by. She had never spent much time in the Azabu district. Mostly
because it was wealthier than her own.

"Are you nervous?" Darien asked, glancing at Serena once more.

"Mmmm... Maybe a little." Serena replied.

	"Why's that?" Darien asked.

"I guess 'cause everyone there will be so much older than me." Serena
shrugged. Darien laughed.

"Don't worry." Darien reached over and squeezed her hand gently.
Serena smiled at him.

'Wow! Darien's being so nice. Maybe we can be friends, after all.'
Serena smiled at the thought.

Darien watched as Serena's smiled widened. He wondered what she
was thinking, but didn't dare ask.

As they approached the hotel where the ceremony was taking place,
Darien watched as Serena's face lit up in excitement. He smiled at her
eagerness and drove to the front of the hotel. A valet parking attendent
helped Serena out of the car as Darien got out of the driver's side. He
handed another attendent the keys to his car, before offering Serena his arm.

The two entered the hotel and were directed to the room Azabu Tech
had rented for the evening. It was large, with a magnificent dance floor.
Darien made a mental note to make sure he danced with Serena before the
night was over.

"Darien!" A voice called. Both Darien and Serena turned to see a
young man headed their direction. Darien as his hand tightened over Serena's.

	"Hi, Phil." Darien smiled politely.

"I checked the seating, and we'll be seated together." Phil
exclaimed. "Whose this lovely lady?"

Serena blushed slightly, before offering her free hand.

"I'm Serena Tsukino. It's a pleasure to meet you."

"The pleasure is all mine. My name is Phillip Lai. Now, if you'll
excuse me..." Phillip bowed slightly as he excused himself. Serena glanced
up at Darien, and noticed that his jaw was clenched, the muscles in his face
taunt.

"What's wrong, Darien?" Serena asked, gently running a finger along
his tight jawline.

"Nothing." Darien muttered, catching her hand in his own.

"I can tell, Darien." Serena replied, her voice firm. Darien sighed.

"Phillip is just like the rest. They'll try to take you away from
me." Darien realized what he had said just as the words escaped his lips.
"What I mean, is that they'll try to take you away dancing and stuff tonight,
and I'm responsible for you and all. I don't want anything to happen to
you."

Serena would have been offended, had Darien not stuttered his way
through. A slight blush touched his cheeks, and Serena almost laughed.

"I understand." She squeezed his hand in reassurance. "Shall we
take a seat?"

Darien nodded and led Serena to a table near the front. He pulled one
of the chairs out for her, and Serena sat down. Darien seated himself next to
her, and smiled.

The lights dimmed, and the Dean of the university stepped onto the small
stage they had set up in the front of the room. Serena looked around as the Dean
spoke. She paid little attention to what was going on as she studied the other
students.

Most of the women seemed a lot older, more beautiful than she was. She
wondered why Darien had taken her instead. She was sure he would find any of
the women she saw there a far more interesting caompanion.

"Bored?" Darien whispered into her ear, startling Serena.

"No." She whispered back. Darien raised an eyebrow.

"I am..." Darien grinned at her, and Serena laughed quietly.

"He's finishing up, Darien. Pay attention!" Serena mock scolded.
Darien turned his attention back to the Dean, and acted like he was paying
rapid attention. Serena smiled at him.

'He looks awful cute.' She thought. 'I think it'll be nice to finally
be friends with Darien. No more arguing!'

"So, without further ado, here is the Head of the English Department,
Professor Smith."

The applause was polite as the middle aged woman stepped onto the stage.
She was holding a small plaque and an even smaller envelope.

"First of all, I'd like to thank all my students for their wonderful
work this year. There were ten nominees for this category, and it is with
great pride that I present this award to..." She paused for dramatic effect.
"Darien Chiba."

Serena smiled brightly at Darien, who rose and graciously made his
way to the stage.

"Thank you, Professor Smith." He shook her hand and accepted the
plaque and envelope.

"Congratulations, Darien. You certainly deserve it!"

By the time the evening was over, Serena realized why she and Darien
had been seated so close to the front. He had won in all the categories he
had been nominated in, including English, science, math, history, biology,
drama, and most promising student. The drama one had surprised Serena a lot,
and she was quite impressed with Darien.

"I'm really happy for you, Darien." Serena told him as they were dancing
together on the ballroom floor.

"Thanks, Serena." Darien smiled at her. He was impressed with her grace
on the dance floor, though he wasn't sure why.

"No, really! You must be an amazing student!" Serena exclaimed. Darien
laughed.

"I work hard, that's for sure."

"Yeah, not like me." She sighed.

"Hey! You can do just as well in school, Serena." Darien insisted,
lifting her head to meet his eyes. Serena shook her head.

	"No, I'm not that smart."

"Yes, you are. I'm going to prove it to you." Darien's voice was
firm and soft. Serena looked up at him in surprise.

	"How?" She asked suspiciously.

"I'm going to tutor you, and we'll see if your test scores don't
improve."

Serena thought the proposition over. Darien was being really nice and
sweet to her now, it was a possibilty that they could be friends, and friends
did things like that for each other. She smiled.

	"Alright."
