Day 11

Water flow drawing that dose not work

I will be adding  my sketches for a new idea that I have been pondering about while I was in my Psycology 165 class today.  My Ideas of placing two power heads in strategic places in the tank will help create better flow in the 12 gallon nano tank.  The Illustration will be up later on tonight when I get the chance to take a picture of it.  I will be testing my idea to see if the water flow has improved any tank conditions.  My idea for a a better water flowing tank will allow anybody with a nano cube to have better water filtration, circulation, skimmer, and  aeration to your own tank.  Better flow can help bring food to live coral as well as create a more natural look to your tank to create an oceanic experience.

Day 19

Rose Anenome

Here is the rose Anenome that I have been trying to keep alive.  In this picture the anenome has attached itself to the bottom side of a piece of Marshal rock laying at the bottom of the tank on the sand.  I have finally decided that the Anenome needed more light and less flow of water.  I turned off the Maxi-jet, and placed the rock on top of the other rocks (Mini-Jet still on ofcourse).  Next I tried to feed it krill, but no luck, the Anenome refuses to eat.  Interestingly I have read an article somewhere on the internet about not feeding Anenome any fish, as in nature it is rare that Anenome's get their food from fish sources.  The Anenome simple does not wonder around preying on fish.  Tommorow I will go out to get some silversides, disregarding what I have read online, and feed it to the anenome.

To be continued...

Day 13

I got a Bi-color Blenny

Today in the afternoon I decided to head over to the LFS to pickup more LR (about .7 lbs WaltSmith Live Rocks)  and a fish.  Little did I know which fish I would be getting.  Would it be a Goby? a Clown? or maybe some other fish.  I ended up getting a bi-color Blenny because the Blenny looked so funny, and I especially liked his antannae.  Other things I also picked up was some tiny 1-2 inch frags of Zooanthids, yellow polyps, and one Rose anenome.  I think i bought one that is already too big : (   (picture will be up real soon)

Live rock Notes: You do not have to buy all the live rock to meet the tanks requirements all at once.  I have started with only 6.1 lbs of Live rocks. There could be a coral that you want later that comes attached to a big piece of  rock.  Building your LR aquascape piece by piece will also allow you to open up to other possibities.

Day 12

Maxi Jet 600

I rotated the Maxi-Jet to its side, and also turning the the flow nozzle to it's side.  Then I attachied the the Maxi-Jet  back to the sunction cup structure.  I think this help make the Maxi-Jet look more compact, and create a better flow.  The Nozzle is pointing slightly to the left of the tank when viewed from the front of the tank.

Day 14

Reducing the flow on the Maxi Jet 600

Note: To decrease or increase the water flow for the Maxi-Jet, move the exhaust, left and right, until the get the amount of flow that you want by feeling the water pressure.  (This didn't seem to work, flow was not really reduced)

Day 19

About Macchan the Blenny

This is Macchan, he is a very curious, and funny Blenny.   He Lives inside the top rock  inside a very small hole, sticking his head out all the time, and looking around.  When it is safe he wiggles out of his hole and sits on his front fins to view the whole tank. One thing he is watching out for is a piece of krill, should one be floating around, as it is his favorite food.  He loves to eat krill, and will swim to get it before the clown gets it, he will even eat the krill out of my finger tips.  Other things he also eats is Tetra flake food, brown diatoms, and green algae. He like to keep his area of living space clean of feces by picking up his poop with his mouth, then burping it out to another area.  Sometimes when he is up to it, he will leave his home just to poop, and then comes back to sit on the rock.  Because he sees me watching him sometimes, he blushes, and his checks become white with embarassment.  The spots that appear on his face from time to time, looks really cool.  Macchan is definately my favorite fish that has big cute alien eyes, and antanaes that make him look like a space alien.

Day 10

New Tank Syndrome

This must be the new tank, brown-green algae phase that I have been reading about on many nano forums.  My LFS told me that the Diatom phase is normal, and should go away as the tank cycles further.  According to Stan and Debbie Hauter on their About web page, the golden brown or brown algae is actually dead diatom skeletons, and is not actually some kind of algae.  The brown looking Diatom is an indication the the nitrogen cycle is near the end or due to other reasons has caused the Diatoms to appear.  Click
here to find out more information about Diatoms, and how to remove them.
Note: Don't forget to view the second and third build page by clicking on  Day 25-32 and Day 35.
update: Continued from day 19 about the rose anenome.

A word about the anenome that I have been keeping in my nano cube for almost 2 months now.  From reading more about aneneme requirements for their successful survival in salt water tank, I have learn now that it would be wise not to have a rose anenome as soon as I have since they need lots of light, hard to care for, and they my not live long in aquarium tanks.  It is deffinately not wise to have a rose anenome in a tank which has not been established for at least 6 months in my opinion.  Mine is still alive today, but I don't know how it will do for a longer period of time.
