Been a while

Day 72

It has been a while since I had wrote anything new and informative hasn't it?  I just don't know what to say any more.  Unless I have some kind of problems to fix, I have nothing to write about.   All there is  maintenance and buying more stuff.  Maybe I could make a review aboutt he prosucts I have used and give a thumbs up or down.  That would open up a whole new page, a page on product reviews.

Leather coral reaction to Salinity

One interesting thing I did notice about my pink leather coral  is that something it does, when the water salinity is not suitable.  When The specific gravity get's any higher than 1.024, it closes up, and shrinks.  When I fix the water sg by removing three cups of water, and adding four cups of reverse osmosis water,, the leather opens back up at 1.023-1.024.  I just thought that was an interesting note.  Just incase you may be wondering why your corals are closing up and not opened up, it my be your water chemistry, so check up on that.

Bubble algae

Day 74

Recently I have not been worried about the algaes that have been growing in my tank, but today I have wondered about the several types of algaes that have been growing in my tank.  Looking around the tank I spotted a couple of green bubble looking algae attached to some of my rocks.  Little did I knew about this type of nuisance algae until I had done my research.  Without removal of these green bubble type algae, the algae will soon multiply in mass quantities as spores are released into the water.  One solution to geting rid of this algae is to carefully remove the bubblle algae by hand, or suck them up with a turkey baster, but you risk poping the bubble releasing spores into the water.  The other method is to buy a Mitrax emerald crab to eat the algae.  I have decided on buying the crab to see if that will take care of the algae.

Mermaid's Wineglass

This type of algae looks green or white under lighting.  This flower plant looking algae grows on a stem, and has a disc ontop.  As of now, I don't know much about this algae, so expect some more updates.

How to read a Hydrometer

Belive it or not, I have made it this far, without knowing how to read a Hydrometer correctly.  Mine is the Deep Six kind.  After the hydrometer needle has been aged by socking the needle for 24 hours in salt water, you can dip the hydrometer into the established tank, and fill the hydrometer up with salt water.  Checking to see if there are no bubbles on the needle, place the hydrometer on a flat level surface.  Now comes the part I did not know about.  Look below the needle, that is where the specific gravity should be checked. Sg levels should be around 1.020-1.024.  Mine is right above 1.023.  Anyways I had decided to pick up a refractometer soon.

How to read a themometer

Why didn't a themometer come with any instructions on how to read it?  Just like my Deep Six hydrometer, I had read my thermometer incorrectly.  When I purchased my Big Digital temp alert today at Marine Depot, I have discovered that the temperature did not match up with the floating thermoter I had been using inside the tank.  I have included a picture which shows how to read a thermometer.

Other things I did today was testing my RO water
tested at 0 mg phosphate

Disolved oxgen in my 12g nano tank
tested at 7 mg

Calcium test on 07/23/04
tested at 460 ppm

Alkalinity tested on 07/24/04
Carbonate hardness tested at 9.6 dKH
Alkalinity tested at 3.42 mg

Here is a nice short story:

While testing Alkalinity/KH, I accidentally knocked over a KH reagent chemical bottle of test fliud.  Half a bottle of the fluid got all over my right pant leg.  After wiping the fluid off my leg, I can feel my leg burn!!! : (

I don't know what kind of chemical that was, I just hope it wasn't hydrochloric acid, there will be a hole in my pants after I wash them : (
