At The Movies

The late 1930’s saw a short-lived revival in fortune for Burke. The silver screen beckoned as he stared in Gipsy Blood, a film telling the story of Carmen. This was followed by 3 Irish musical films, Father O’flynn (1935), Kathleen Mavourneen (1937) and My Irish Molly (1938).

This could have been the start of a new era of success for him but the small matter of World War II intervened and Burke ended up singing in pubs and clubs for a few pounds a night.

Never quite able to appreciate his own great talent, Burke died on the 13th September 1969 at the age of 80.

Buried in Wallington cemetery, Surrey, his headstone reads…

"I HAVE NEVER HEARD MY MUSIC MORE BEAUTIFULLY SUNG"

Puccini.
