The Kingdom of Hanover is a constitutional monarchy, and the king is its Head of State. Unlike some constitutional monarchies, such as the UK, the king of Hanover has significant legal power: he can issue Royal Decrees and Letters Patent, and appoint members of the government.

Hanover has had three kings since it was founded in late 2002. These have been King James , who now holds the honorary title 'Duke of Marchmain', King Thomas, the Duke of Brunswick, and King Alexander, who is still on the throne. There is currently no designated heir to the throne of Hanover.
