These Character Bios are temporary and will be replaced by more comprehensive ones in the near future, so check back soon! Since Margo grew up off-screen, the details of her background are sketchy. Margo grew up in Iowa as the oldest of Bart and Lyla Montgomery's three kids. Lyla, of course, was a nurse, while Bart was a traveling salesman. While Margo's childhood was certainly happier than her future husband's, she too had her own problems. In particular, Margo grew up wondering why her father didn't love her the way he loved her brother Craig (a year younger than Margo and her closest friend growing up) or sister Cricket. She was also confused by her parent's sudden divorce right before the family (sans Craig) moved to Oakdale. Over time, Margo came to suspect that she was the product of an affair. What she didn't know at the time was that she was correct: while a student at Northwestern University (and apparently already married to Bart), Margo's mother Lyla had an affair with a fellow student, John Dixon. Bart had discovered this fact at some point (and maybe had always suspected it) which was why he could never warm up to his oldest daughter. Though Margo grew up in Iowa (established during the Doug Marland years), her family had been living in Chicago just prior to their move to Oakdale. When Lyla and her two daughters arrived in town, 21-year-old Margo was planning to follow in her mother's footsteps: she was working as a student nurse. |
