Before the season of 2001 started almost all the "experts" were united. Hammarbys financial problems and unexceptional squad would inevitably lead to automatic relegation from the Swedish Premier League.
What happened during seven glorious months was nothing short of a miracle. We won the championship! For the first time ever! Eat poo, all you so called "experts"!
I saw my first Hammarby game in 1978 (I think) a 1-0 defeat at home to Halmia! I haven't missed many games since I arrived in Sweden to live in 1982. Many years of hurt and suffering have at last been turned into orgasmic glory!
Whatever happens in the future, footballwise, is almost unimportant. (Not quite but almost!). For the season of 2001 will always be the zenith of my football watching career. Even if we win the Champions League, it will never compare to this.
So thank you Sir Sören Cratz, trainer supreme. Thank you Lasse Eriksson, the greatest
goalkeeper ever. Thank you Mikael Andersson, the most underrated footballer ever. Thank you Kennedy. Thank you Herman. Thanks to everyone involved in Hammarby IF Football 2001. You gave us Heaven. It cannot be described in any other way. |
