When Portola lead the first explorers into the San Gregorio Valley, they noted that the rich soil and cool climate would be good for growing crops of all kinds. The native americans who lived here did not farm. They harvested grass seeds and acorns.

When the american settlers came in the 1850's, the first thing they did was to clear the sidehills and plow.
