WORKFORCE INVESTMENT BOARDS
The Cook County
President’s Office of Employment Training (POET) is operated under the
Workforce Investment Act of 1998 (WIA) which replaced the Job Training
Partnership Act. Funds for services to WIA participants in the State of Illinois are distributed by the Illinois Department of Commerce &
Economic Opportunity (DCEO) by region. Under WIA these regions are referred
to as Local Workforce Areas (LWA). South and West Suburban Cook County is known as Local Workforce
Investment Area #7. The West Suburban Area is defined as Suburban Cook County from Devon Avenue south to Pershing Road. The South Suburban area is
defined as Suburban Cook County from Pershing Road to the south border of Cook County.
Local Workforce Area #7, #8, and #9 programs are overseen
by the Cook County Workforce Investment Board, which is comprised of a majority
of representatives from private industry and other workforce development
stakeholders and are appointed by the President of the Cook County Board.
