There are some movies you know are bad... and some movies that you think are
bad. This movie is one I thought would be bad. On Sunday nights, after my
kids are in bed, my hubby and I sit down and watch a movie. We get Showtime
and the Movie Channel, and that wonderful device called InDemand. While cruising the horror area, we found this movie.
Never hearing anything of it before, I hopped onto my fantastic wireless
connection (yes, I’m spoiled), and looked up the info on this particular
film. Everything I read made it sound like a glorified porn (no it's not
marketed that way, so don't get your hopes up). Perfect for the Hubby and me. Thing is... WHAT PORN!!!!!?
The movie opens on two campers fucking. Ok... I see where the misconception
of porn may have come from here. The woman is riding the guy with her
obviously fake breasts, when something rushes by the tent. She freaks out
and tells her companion that she wants to leave. He tells her it's probably
some animal or teens having fun, gets dressed and then leaves the tent. He
looks around, turning towards the strange sounds, and then hears the girl
cry out. The tent is empty when he returns and then he finds his girl cut
in half with her entrails coming out. He turns around to find himself
clubbed. When he comes to, he finds that he is chained down to a rock. He
works on getting a knife and cuts his straps off. Once he is free of the
table, he walks around curiously. ‘Course he gets stabbed this time, then
placed on a stake and roasted. Yum.
Then we get to the actual story about a group of college students on a
journey to Ireland as a class trip. They are studying the Druids and there
is talk of some French clan that were cannibals. There is some talk of how
they could have immigrated to Ireland and were inbred, but supposedly all
caught. The class is being lead by their teacher, Karen... who, in the VW Van,
encourages Shea to try to get more involved with the other students. Once
they get to the house, the group of students decides to hit the pubs in the
town while the teacher goes and unpacks. Karen walks into the bathroom to find
behind the door.... *waits, building suspense*… her boyfriend Paul. After
that initial startle happens, they kiss their hellos. Karen leaves a room to bump into... *more suspense* Shea, who admits that she didn't want to hit the pub.
We then cut to Shea, dicing up a carrot. She is getting made fun of by the
guys of the group because she is so jumpy. They ask her if she likes scary
movies and thus, she gives the truest line there is (and the actual summary
of this and every cheezy horror flick); "No they are always the
same. It's always some slow walking killer stalking some over sexed
teenagers and some big breasted bimbos who can't act. And besides, only the
virgin gets to live at the end."
Now the group is watching one of the Halloween movies. They are all yelling
at the screen telling the "big breasted bimbo" to not go to a certain place
or say certain things. Steve (one of the guys in the class) and the
rest of the group continue to give the nervous Shea a hard case. She leaves
and, once gone, Karen tells the group to go easy on Shea.
Upstairs, Shea takes a bubble bath (no tits though) when she hears a strange
sound. She wraps herself in a towel and goes out into the hall, where she
finds it was a blown open window. She turns around to return to the bathroom,
only to have Steve jump out at her. She heads back to the bathroom.
Next scene we see a guy chopping wood. Karen goes to him and asks him if
he's the caretaker. He admits he is, and asks Karen if she is a heavy
sleeper. She is, and asks him how he knew. He then tells her how he was in
her room. Just then, Paul comes up behind her, and tells her how he was kept
up all night by a leaky faucet and how she slept through it. Paul also
states that he asked Gary to fix it. Karen looks relieved that she isn't
talking to a crazy stalker type and apologizes for her initial reaction.
Gary tells her that she and those with her should stay on the path, because
those who wander from the path tend to fall into misfortune. Just then
Pandora, Gary's cousin, appears and tells the American couple that her
cousin likes to scare people and not to listen to him. Gary goes on about how it
is Samhain and that it’s not safe to be there. He also reveals that he's a
clairvoyant and he sees nothing but death for those on this class trip. He
stresses again to stay on the path.
They take a lesson at some Druid ruins before they all split up. The couple
goes off the path (even after being warned by Gary… again) and find
themselves at a castle looking thing, which they enter. Steve and the blonde
bitch named Barbara go back to the house and fuck in the shower (nothing
spectacular... more realistic than anything) and Shea goes out to the lake
alone. Karen gets apprehensive and goes outside to see if she can start
finding everyone when... death ensues.
I didn't think I was going to be impressed with this movie. It has all the
cliché ear markings of a typical horror film, just like the line in it
suggests. I was surprised, though. The opening credits were shots of the
Irish Coast, mixed in with black, red splattered title and acting
information. It kept me guessing through out the whole movie and the gore
was realistic enough to make me grossed out (but in a good way). There was a
twist at the end that left you guessing what just happened, and that made it
worthwhile to see. The story was the typical slasher flick, but as slashers
go, it kept my attention.
I don't see how it can be considered, even by viewers, as a porn-type flick.
Yes there are a lot of titty shots and they are all fake, not that I'm
surprised. I've seen better fucking scenes in foreign films. Still, some
fucking is better than no fucking.
I can't say that I didn't like this movie. I can't think of anything I can
really ridicule. I really enjoyed it. Even the fact that the story basis
appears to be cliché, then twists, it is just excellent. So, take my word
for it, it's a great movie to watch.
