About Your Reporter
Tom Grandy portrays a newspaper correspondent employed by the "Daily Richmond Examiner" during the Civil War. Tom hails from Denver Colorado, which is actually South of "Mason-Dixon" geographically, and why those fellers from Texas in 1862 were making a journey from Texas through New Mexico and planned to stop at Denver claiming the land for the Confederacy. Unfortunately, these fine fellers were stopped at Glorieta Pass near Santa Fe, New Mexico and never planted the "Stars and Bars" at Denver. You can read the full details as witnessed by Tom R. Grandy via special assignment for the "Santa Fe New Mexican" presented here on the stories page. Tom is a member of the First Texas Infantry Division, Co. B headquartered at Denver and travels with the First to various events in Colorado and the United States attempting to capture a news mans view of the events in a 19th Century style using historic documentation and his own "First Person" flair to put history in the present as if it truly is the 1860s. Tom wasn't always a correspondent, but a soldier in the First Texas. Tom took part as a soldier at a number of big events like, Franklin in 1995, Wilderness, 135th Shilo, Antietem, and Gettysburg, to name a few. Tom had to retire from soldiering when on the field at Gettysburg a Yankee ball pierced his side and lodged itself near his spine. The surgeons lacking the nessesary skills to safely remove the ball, agreed to leave it where it stopped, but assured Tom that his fighting days were over. The truth is not so glamorous, but partly true. Tom suffered an upper back injury and is unable to carry the load a soldier is required to carry. Tom gave up reenacting for a time selling off his soldier clothes and musket, but not his spirit for the hobby. After a number of years past, Tom decided to rejoin the fellows of the First Texas, but as a War Correspondent. This way Tom can be where the fighting is and not compelled to carry a musket. Since then, Tom has become a fine writer and respected member of the First Texas. He has also earned the respect of fellow reenactors who portray War Correspondents, though they are of the Yankee persuasion. They are all members of what is known as "The Bohemian Brigade" and they do a fantastic impression each and every one. You can look for Tom at upcoming events and he is open to special invites by your Civil War organization. Come on Virginians! Have Tom report on your every move for your Richmond newspaper.
