Rolepaly withdrawl: An essay By Dre with comments by Sky I have noticed that after times of extended, continuouse roleplay, one gets adicted. This is something that I velieve every rolepplayer has found out. But, when one roleplays continuously for a concentrated period of time (like twelve hours a day for a week) and then is suddenly forced to stop ...something sets in taht I like to call RPWD ( Rolepaying Withdrawl disorder ). Some symptoms: 1- depression 2- constant fantasizing about roleplay 3- a feeling of lacking a part of yourself when not playing your characters 4- seeing the world though the eyes of a favorite character. 5- wanting your friends in the roleplay community to be "real" ( as in, wanting them to be around you as if they were near you IRL ) 6- finding that your RL friends remind you of your RP friends 7- more depression and many more... Now, I have found that there are quite a few ways to deal with this. 1- write stories of keep constant journals about your characters IRL. This works a bit better if NOT on the computer ( because if your're typing on the computer you'll be roleplaying anyway silly ). Just get a notebook and pen/pencil and do your thing! 2- Read books concerning your roleplay topics. For most of us, fantasy/ sci-fi novels should do the trick. 3- Get in touch with RP friends via phone or snail mail to discuss plot development while you can't actually be on the computer. * Do not do this step if it makes you uncomfortable or you are a minor - or if you live with your parents who just happen to be devil spawn- and are not able 4- Take a complete break from RP *Not recommended * 5- Hang out with RL friends more. See a movie. Sleep - oh blissful sleep. Watch TV. Hurt your siblings. Find a girlfriend/boyfriend to make out with. Well folks, this is my assesment. I hope this helps... Best regards, Dreliak and Sky had a few things to say: A few Symptoms...[not] listed that I went though when I was away from the computer: - the habit of using "LOL" or "LAMO" when someone tells a joke IRL - Dreaming about RP storylines, characters, plots etc. - wondering why your fingers are twitching as if you are typing -...trying to remember how to do things without special powers - would this also incude being unable to concentrate on homework? How about thinking that your boyfriend would be better if he acted more like Charater X? Or dreaming that a certain character that isn't yours, but you would realy like, would suddenly become a real person and he was avaliable?!? - Merlie I myself have some experience with RPWD- and I found all the above ( well most of it anyway -_-' ) hilariously true. Any Rpers out there have any more thoughts on the subject? Main back to fan fic index |
